in normal day to day its around 50-60, however there are a lot of things that affect it.

there is some research done with fighter pilots that showed the human brain is able to observe a change on a screen at the equivalent to 250FPS. This is not a constant thing but shows when the only task is watching the screen so that 100% concentration is used for that task. It is generally thought that too much information input will over load most people, this was proven during testing the Eurofighter pilot system where the pilots blacked out while in level flight simply due to the amount of information they were trying to deal with.

so with that in mind the brain will make up it mind how many FPS we can see at depending on any given situation and can not be given any specific number but could theoretically exceed 250FPS while pumped with things like adrenalin and other stimulants that may or may not be produced by the body. most people will never exceed the need for more than about 50FPS

oh and don't forget, the brain makes up most of what it sees. the only thing humans see in any detail is about the size of thumb nail at arms length, there rest is just blurry shapes. the other interesting fact is the eye has twice as many green cones as red or blue.

Which is why NVGs are green, because we can distinguish contrast better in various shades of green.

to stop and watch some boring video about stuff nope. got a few seconds in and found myself falling asleep. if he want to give information across he needs to take lessons on how to do it in an interesting way, maybe he can pick up some tips from Michael over at vsauce

Hence all the fuss a few years back about 100Hz tellies...

So yeah, round about 60hz and you can detect flicker...

So 60Hz panel = max. of 60 fps displayed? Nah, my Q6600 is old anyway, even 30 fps is enough now. Laughing

I'm sure I read somewhere that the human eye can detect upto 26fps, anything over that is just a smoother picture, but go under it and you can detect a flicker? Or is that bobbins?

More likely to detect flicker and flashing and movement in your peripheral vision.

Survival necessity to ensure that our attention focused on things that were going out to hunt us or be hunted by us.

If we're looking straight at it we're already focusing attention on it... but if we're not, it needs to take attention away from what we're looking at.

Back in the days of CRT tellies, normally they'd appear flicker free.
However, if you looked at them umop ap!sdn you'd see it (as the scanning pattern was backwards).

Having a frame rate at least twice what we can perceive would help to ensure that it really isn't noticeable.
