My shaft keeps leaking from the top. It's making a mess of my rubber. I'm worried the back end will get a bit slippery in the wet:

Innuendos aside, I know it's a vent at the top, but what causes it to vent when it's cold? The oil on my tyre does give me slight cause for concern but I'm mostly just curious about the cause?

It looks from the picture as though part 13 has gone

Other than that seal,is there too uch oil in there?

It should only be up to the level of the filler plug (#27) and not overfilled by the breather

I should have clarified more rather than making innuendos, it doesn't do it all year around, only when it is really cold out (as in less than 5°c or so), it's definitely not overfull, it isn't even possible to overfill it, but I changed the oil early last spring and it has done 10k miles or so since then with no sign of this oil. Last time I noticed it was last winter.

I take it thats a 900 Divy? If so... they all do that sir.
I put it down to the thick cold oil being flung harder than when warm and thinner. It does seem to find its own level after a bit.

Judging by the amount of oil there that should keep you pretty 'kin busy !. Gotta get that sorted before you become a high-speed pedestrian, 100 metre strides can't be done every time !.

What oil do you have in there?

Is it definitely coming from the vent (29) or elsewhere? Oil seal 26 might be the culprit, but I am yet to actually examine a Yamaha bevel box that has failed in that way. Perhaps take rear wheel off and inspect drive splines. See whether they turn smoothly and look for traces of oil seepage. Perhaps bearing goes out of tolerence in the cold.

My bevel box is very similar. Runs rock oil gl5 80w90 and is no bother in cold weather.
