Hostel hostility?

Are hostels really that bad ?
I have been "oop North" and to Scotishland on my travels over the last few years (nothing really significant).
On all trips, I have used hostels at some point to keep costs down and to get out of the hostile weather.
So far I have not had any real issues apart from a few ignorant noisy twats, no big deal.
Last year I went on my little tour with a few friends and they were adamant that we would not stay at hostels??
My mate who wants to come on a small tour with me next year is really against the idea of using hostels??

Why are people so resistant to the idea of using a hostel?
Basic yer! provide your own food yer! cook your own food yer! make your own bed yer!
Is that so terrible if the hostel is significantly cheaper than a B&B or a hotel?

Tbh the price is narrowing.

Manchester has 2 hostels which are £20 a night £35 on a weekday travel lodge deal (which they have frequently) gets you a much better place.

B&B is only £30 in some places too.

I've stayed in one once with a few friends. We just rented the whole room rather than sharing with random strangers and seemed OK. Didn't have any problems with other residents and the staff were helpful. I think it worked out at around £13 a night or something.

Hostels make sense for one person, but with 2 people the amount you save over a twin room is minimal

but personally I don't like them, might be useful for long distance walking but I wouldn't bother on motorbikes, trail riding maybe

Only had one bad experience of a hostel and that was when our room got broken into and bags searched through. Fortunately we'd not left anything of value so nothing was taken.

We were the only ones in that room though, there were 3 bunks between 6 of us, so nobody else should have been in it.



Every other experience has been somewhere between fine to brilliant.


Last time I stayed in a hostel was when I went snowboarding in New Zealand, was on my own as none of my mates could get the time off, so went down for a couple of days. Met some awesome people in the evening and got to know them over the few nights, had some great fun, especially sneaking into one of the hotels outdoor spa complexes to use the hot tub in the middle of the night

I would rather pay a little more and get a room and a bathroom to myself rather than share with other people. I'm not great when it comes to sleeping and if I'm with someone who snores then I won't sleep at all, similarly it takes me a few nights to feel comfortable in a new room before I can drop off. Apparently I am a very light sleeper!

Not sure about hostels in the UK but in Europe hostels are great places especially if travelling on your own as you always meet people to party with, share excursion costs with, dine with etc..

If travelling with a misses then it's pointless as you'll want some privacy.

The price for two people isn't that much different from booking a cheap room on via booking.com or the like.

I tend to stay in hostels when in large cities (e.g. Budapest), then camp when in smaller places or on the way to places (e.g. Siofok, Split)

Up here the difference in price for a hotel and a hostel can be huge, especially in Summer. Most of the time I'd still prefere my tent or a camping hut/wigwam.

There's always that one German guy in the corner who complains about any noise above a whisper after 9pm, snores all night then gets up at 6am, turns all the lights on, stomps about, has a shower, sprays a full can of deodourant over himself then fucks off, leaving the light on behind him and water all over the bathroom floor.

I'd say shoot him as soon as you arrive and make sure nobody finds the body until after you leave.

And don't go to Kirkwall YHA. It has the look and feel of a WW2 internment camp... and not without good reason.

Stayed in a hostel in Brussels years ago, filthy place you had to sleep dressed up and hugging your belongings, stuff would get stolen while you slept.

Last year stayed at a hostel in Caernarfon. The owner showed us the best pub and stayed for a few...well most of the evening.
Clean and no weirdos.
