When refuelling yesterday I spilled some petrol from the nozzle on the fuel tank again. I know it's not good for the paint but it evaporated very quickly in a few seconds. How damaging is petrol to paints on newer bikes?

Not very. It only tends to have a visible effect on paint that's been badly lacquered.
