I am looking at a waterproof phone mount for my bike and also a bluetooth headset ear piece. Does anyone use this combination for a sat nav?

Could anyone recommend a case and mount and also a bluetooth ear piece please. I don't want to spend a lot maybe max £30. I have looked at bike specific sat navs and thought why spend that much when my phone has a really good sat nav.

Thanks

How much data will a phone use in sat nav mode? Plus mount, plus waterproof case, plus blue tooth ear piece that fits under your helmet, plus wiring it in so it's on charge.

Can't be arsed with all that is why I have a TT rider but there will be plenty on here that do use their phones for it.

Almost no data at all since it's in GPS mode which is usually free.

It's battery that is the killer, anything high accuracy / talking to lots of satellites will eat charge - i don't get more than a couple of hours out of my Nexus 5 if using it for a SATNAV.

Would be cheaper to get a good phone that has a removable ( and changeable) battery so you can take a 2nd fully charged one with you for the return trip.

I wouldn't bother with a mount, just put said phone in a ziplock bag and put it in your inner pocket and use the phone in bluetooth audio mode only.

But if you only want to spend £30 - good luck.

Bluetooth headset from eBay like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Interphone-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Helmet-Bluetooth-Headset-handsfree-New-/361075971741?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item5411ce169d I had that exact one but from a different seller, if you can find it from a seller that claims it has intercom then buy it and then complain it doesn't have intercom (that one doesn't), it got me a partial refund so the headset cost less than £10.

Mine worked great till I crashed and the impact smashed it.

For the phone/GPS I use this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Yoke-and-handlebar-Fitting-Sat-Nav-GPS-Holder-Phone-Holder-LUGGPS06-/331354272261?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4d2640f205 it sits on the yoke securely. If you have bars not clip on's then you need something different. Avoid these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-5-Waterproof-GPS-Phone-SatNav-Case-Motorcycle-Bike-Handlebar-Mount-Holder-/151153651827?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item233175b073 I had one on my old bike and the way the case mounts to the mount is shit, the ball jpint on the mount is also shit and wears down fast making it floppy unless you wedge something in the ball.

It doesn't use any data as a sat nav, maps are all downloaded. The phone is a windows 8.1, so basically a pc in your pocket. I use it in the car all the time. I have looked on Amazon and found a bluetooth ear piece for £9 and a mount with case for £14.15.

Case: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Arkon-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Handlebar-Waterproof/dp/B003FMUP0K/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1419407524&sr=8-4&keywords=motorcycle+phone+waterproof+case

Ear piece: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MYXUQ46/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1C2B5A7KS8XVNFJ07BF6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294

I think it is probably worth spending more on the ear piece reading the reviews.

I use the Sony Ericsson MW600 Bluetooth earphones. It is a Bluetooth unit with a 3.5mm jack; it comes with some earphones but I use some different in-ear ones that are more comfortable ones under my helmet. It can connect to two devices, so I have a bike satnav and an old iPhone 4 which I use only for streaming music; I leave it in my topbox and the headset connects as soon as I get in range. The battery lasts ages.

What is it with people not understanding that with a proper sat nav application a phone doesn't need to use any data.

Sat Nav apps existed for phones long before people used data.

GPS doesn't drain a phones battery much at all. What does is having the screen on.

Unlike a Garmin with say a 256 colour screen, a phone has 16m, a stronger backlight and better contrast ratio.

If you really want to make the batter last, put it in flight mode when using it as a sat nav. I've never needed to make a call or send a text whilst riding.

Now where a top of the range dedicated sat nav device is going to be much better than a phone is accuracy. A phone polls the GPS 1 once per second. A top of the range sat nav (not usually road based ones) can poll at 5 - 10hz

You need to rethink that statement.

GPS sports watch tracker. Using GPS 5 hours batter life. Not using GPS 5 days.....

Also a lot of cpu power with GPS as it needs to maths the locations.
