Back in October I bought myself a drift ghost hd of eBay and it was working fine until when one day I was charging it from the mains and it fell about a foot with the usb still attached, and now the usb doesn't fit correctly and it doesn't charge:( so I was just wondering if anyone knows anywhere that fixes drift ghost?

Cheers in advance

Does it also charge via HDMI? There's a mini HDMI socket there but you may
need to source a cable. I got one from ebay myself for 1.99 delivered.
I'll have a go with mine later and report back

No you have to use the mini USB, there may be a way to charge the battery out of it on a stand alone charger.
The mini-USB on mine broke away completely inside without any obvious incident to cause it other than connecting and disconnecting.
That was still under warranty and they sent a new camera.
Suggests to me this must be a reasonably common fault.

Inside, the mini-USB is soldered direct to the main board with tiny legs.
If you see how it is done you would be far more careful plugging it in - does not look strong.
You *might* be able to re-attach it or have someone with electronic skills do it.
Getting into the camera internals only requires a Phillips 00 size screwdriver, it's all fairly simple inside with nothing to fall out and be impossible to put back right.

If its only the USB connection point thats damaged this might be a cheap get-around fix.

External charger (and a spare battery) for under a tenner.

Imagine that will still leaves you with the problem of getting the videos off the camera, but if you get a cheap USB card reader like this you should be able to get files off it easily.

Not a fix admittedly and will take a few seconds to remove the battery/card each time, but I doubt getting it properly fixed is going to cost around a tenner Razz

I have two batteries, a charger and a USB microSD card reader. One battery is always charging, when the camera runs out of battery I just swap over. I never plug mine in via USB, unless I'm touring and I need to charge two batteries simultaneously overnight.

I've had bad luck with mini-USB connectors, all too often they've stopped working on various devices.

FWIW i've got one of the older drift 720's and i'm really pleased with it - only issue i've ever had is it needed drying out once but that was riding in really severe rain at motorway speeds for a few hours and my model is 'weatherproof' as opposed to the waterproof newer models; so I was probably asking for trouble then.

Externally it seems incredibly solid, i've dropped my helmet with it attached numerous times, and walked it into the garage door forgetting it was sticking out the top of my helmet at least 10 times; not a single scratch or dent Razz

Mounted up on top as well it doesn't create any drag which is nice, I completely forget its there.

Alright thanks a lot guys for the help, I think I'm going to contact drift as I was just going to use the external chargers but then I'd be stuck if I have to update the software on the camera.

Keep in mind this is just one persons experience. I love my Drift Ghost S and the USB port feels solid. I'd happily swing it around by the attached USB cable and wouldn't worry about breaking it.

The only other decent alternative at the moment is the GoPro 4, and I've heard they're more software-issue prone than the Drift cameras.

I'm pretty happy with mine too.
Seems quite robust to me as well.
My screen/bodywork mount arrived today so I may go out in my S3
for a play later. Too wet for video shenanigans on a bike where I am today.

As the thread shifted towards "What do you think about your Drift?" I will say I don't like my Drift Ghost.
-It often freezes and the only way to make it work is removing the battery for a moment.
-Battery life is only good when the battery is new, then it's not that great.
-Video quality is OK'ish, GoPro is much better.
-Drift mounts are rubbish, I replaced all the mounts with GoPro ones + adapter.
-A fault developed with my battery hatch, when asked about parts availability (dealers don't have them) my email was simply ignored. There are no other parts available than lenses, batteries and mounts so I'm pretty sure OP that you won't find anything useful from Drift website to repair your USB port.

Interesting. I have to ask, why did you buy a drift then?

With the freezing, is it just total lock up, or is there an error that comes up? I get a 'slow card' error every so often, about once a month.

Haven't had an issue with battery life, are you recording on High Bitrate perhaps?

GoPro 3s look about the same as the Ghost S with the Ghost S edging the win, the 4 is a bit better than the Ghost S.

What's wrong with the mounts? I've got the curved one on my helmet and I tried to take it off when changing helmet and nearly broke the old helmet in the process... That 3M stuff is crazy. To be fair enough I did clean both my helmets with IPA to get them clean as can be.

Wotcha.

I found 'em to be more than helpful - they even sent me a replacement camera when mine was out of guarantee date.

When the battery latch broke on my old HD170 they upgraded me to the smaller HD 1080p which was nice.

The camera becomes unresponsive, the only way to fix it it to take the battery out and put it back in. I've never had card errors though - I used only 32GB 10-rated one, so that particular card was causing no problems.

Albigularis wrote:

I record 1080p at 30fps. I've had 3 batteries and same happened to them. At first I could get about 2.5 hours out of them if recorded in one go. Then that decreased to much below 2 hours after a while. Also Drift Ghost drains the battery when not used. The worse battery age the more of that effect you experience. If I leave one of my fully charged batteries inside the camera for one night (camera switched off) then in the morning out of three bars I get 2 if I'm lucky, but more likely 1. So basically it needs to get charged again. I made keeping batteries outside the camera a habit. But that problem exists.

Did you do the tests by yourself? I can tell the footage from Drift is quite disappointing - it's got good vibrant colours, but it lacks sharpness. I've seen some GoPro footage and it looked better. I cannot say about Drift Ghost S because I haven't tested one.

Drift mounts with exception of helmet mount are all rubbish. I've tested them all on the motorcycle. Too much play and shaky videos. Also not great variety. And there are really no decent mounts to attach your camera for track days. The main issue is the bit attached to camera that slides into your mounts. There is just too much play in those - any vibration kills your footage. No that much vibration on your head so it doesn't work too bad there and the mount is sufficient.

I still use Drift as helmet camera. Don't get me wrong, it does the job. I bought it so I use it. I'm a bit worried that the footage may not get recorded if I crash. I crashed in Cadwell Park and all I got was a corrupted file, which I fixed eventually but all that was recorded was everything until about 3 seconds before the crash. So I'm worried it can happen again.

No please don't keep the footage to yourself, get a Youtube channel and maybe do some bits on maintenance as well together with riding tips and some philosophical stuff about how to live your life. Would be viewing gold to thousands.
