Hi guys. I'm new here.
I'm looking at buying a yamaha fazer 1000. 2003 model but it's got 50k on the clock. There's no history with it and the fairing is missing because it's turn into a streetfighter. Used to be a police bike.
I've done HPI check.
2 previous owners.
Owner says it rides like half the mileage and he bought it from an auction and it didn't have the service history. It's been resprayed and the logbook needs updating to the new colour.

I need some guidelines on what to check when I go look at this bike. I really want a fazer and turn it into a streetfight so it's the perfect bike but I dont wAnt my head ruling my heart. What things should I look for On the bike?

It's just had a service and a mot.

It's cheap. £1400 so I've got a a few hundred to play with putting things right.

Sounds to me that its been down the road at some point, streetfightered and resprayed would be ringing alarm bells.

Go have a look for any sign of crash damage bar end scuffs, rearsets, brake/clutch levers aftermarket? all the stuff thats likely to go first in an accident

Well, that is cheap and it's already been mangled to save you the bother.

How long has the current owner had it? Who did the service and MOT?

If he's just bought it with a police 'service' and MOT on it and then punted it straight on, I'd approach with considerable caution. If he's run it for a year and put some miles on it himself, then that's more re-assuring.

He's only owned it for a few months.

Here's the link.

Not bothered about the headlight or seat but can anyone see any other problems in the pictures?

Appreciate all your advice.

7 months MOT, not 12. He's selling it with one of those "just needs" jobs that was apparently too much bother for him to do.

Judge it on its actual condition and don't shake without a test ride.

For a similar price you can get them with lower miles in better nick with luggage I would avoid that one tbh.

I don't think I'd touch that one, certainly not at that price. First thing that caught my eye, was the engine. It looks like it's just been sprayed all-over matt black. Rough. Lots of rusty nuts and bolts, rust on exhaust collector, where the EXUP valve is. If you have to get the valve apart for servicing, the bolts will snap = headaches. It just doesn't look well cared for, and I'd avoid anything that gives that impression. As said, probably been down the road, who knows what problems it's hiding if so.

Get on the Fazer owners forum. Be patient, and you'll get something much better for not a lot more money. This one on there now, might not be around for long:

These bikes have no problems with that kind of mileage, if they're looked after. Don't think your example has been.

There have been a lot of ebay the past month between £1500-2. Might not be now but there was when I was looking.

To avoid embarrassment don't go to Finland or Latvia on it.

Fazer a brand of chocolate there.
