We all know they don't have indicators but how about this....?

We live on a large junction of two major A roads. One has a slight uphill incline.

Tonight we have about 3 inches of snow (and still falling).

Traffic has been completely snarled up because a succession of BMWs and Audis* have failed to make it up the hill (it is barely a hill really). Despite helpful motorists getting out and pushing, the bloody things just won't get a grip.

Much hilarity at Suntan towers as we watch from the warmth of our bay window, but seriously, why are these rear wheel drive cars so useless?

Whatever happened to fit for purpose. After all it does snow in Germany innit.

* the 4x4 ones do a little better but all are outsmarted by a tiny Toyota Aygo,

And another thing! Don't these people watch the weather forecast. We did, and brought forward our 90 minute journey to get home before the snow started. #feelingsmugandtoasty

I think its a combination of summer tyres and an inability to drive/over reliance on gadgets. I have an ancient RWD car that has summer tyres on it, but I practice as soon as there is a little snow or ice. Hence no probs, or if its really bad out comes the Landy!!

Well to tip the balance I have just done 20 odd miles in the snow, in a Audi, none quattro, and I didnt get stuck once, where as many others were stuck on hills etc, even a 4x4 thing got a little cocky and slid it into a kerb on the island, yet the plucky 1.9TD Audi didnt struggle,

The problem isnt the cars its the idiots driving them, we used to go out in it just for the crack, now you just cant risk it as there are so many idiots on the road.

Tyres play a big part, I've had 2 BMWs and the one that had the better tyres on it wasn't much problem at all in the snow. With the other, I had to load up the boot with sacks of sand and carry a shovel with me, it really sucked badly.

Beemer drivers only have to put a few concrete blocks in their boot for rain or snow, saves a lot of hassle and red faces, I have to do the same with my Volvo estate which is a bit weird considering they are manufactured in the land of ice and snow but are useless in the same unless fitted with spiked tyres or snow chains which is not really practical in our half cleared and gritted roads in the UK. On the other hand maybe Beemers and Audis have a habit of attracting twat drivers with small dicks.

Couple of years ago now, with a pair of these on my pushbike cycling on ice was no problem, when cycling past a car where the driver has been wheel spinning and they're unable to make their car move, you'd get some very confused looks from the drivers. Laughing

The fun continues!

The snow plough's just been up the road, quickly, followed by another beemer with low profile tyre, didn't make it more than 3m on the ploughed snow before giving up and reversing back onto the island!

I'm, eagerly, anticipating a loud crunch, among the incessant wheelspining, sometime tonight!

It's better than the telly! Laughing

It's only now I find out that Sid's a curtain twitcher.

Who knew? Mr. Green

Edit: To be fair though, our Sky has gone down on account of the giant bolus of snow on the dish so there's not much else to do Shocked

And yet, the last time we had proper snow and ice, when the buses had stopped running and the roads were littered with abandoned vehicles, I fairly cruised up the steep hill which I live on top of, in my 740 Auto.

As the saying goes, it's not what you've got, it's how you use it Wink

As I type there is a tool, in a small hatchback, drifting round the island.

I can only assume he's failed to see the unmarked police car, that has been there for the last two hours, blocking a road off, lights on, engine running! Mr. Green

Dropped tyre pressure in the Volvo (940 - big, old, RWD) to 20 psi last time it snowed and made it up this 1 in 3 incline with no bother (but a bit of wheelspin)

4x4 going the other way had the ABS chattering all the way down going the other way until they slid into a kerb, then a parked car.

Moral of the story is tyres and a bag of sand in the boot maketh the snow experience.
