In this month's Classic M/C Mechanics, someone who has clearly quite taken leave of their senses, has commissioned Stan Stephens to build this engine Shocked

Just when you thought 2T special builds couldn't get any more crazy!

EDIT: Ok, read it now, so a little more detail:

One-and-a-half RD500LC crankcases welded together, Yamaha Banshee barrels stroked to 54mm. No powervalves, and tuned to give a bit of mid-range rather than full-on top end. Looks like power output could be in the region of 200bhp!

Read with great interest, as the technical solutions and engineering involved will be epic no matter how good the end result is.

The motor I was led to believe was not going to go into a bike, and if it did I would love to know how even a pure wizard could engineer 6 125cc sized expansion chambers to fit reasonably?

If the motor is for a 4wheeled vehicle, then my only question is that if it needs to be 2stroke, did they consider some of the bigger more powerful snowmobile or PWC engines?

I would not suggest an outboard motor at 1200cc capacity, as they are far from suited to bike applications, but if you needed a 2-3.5litre 2stroke lump for something, then that is where I'd look to before trying to get something designed and built from scratch.

Id quite like an old e30 powered by an outboard engine. Somewhere around 250 hp 2 stroke, ridiculous exhaust system and a nice brappy idle.

The wankel conversion is too common.

"...he was worried that it may not actually be rideable!"*

Which sounds to me like it's going in a bike Shocked

Stevo, I don't think this is about what might be better or worse for the job. Just an engineering project Uncle Stan thought he could do, probably for the hell of it, then someone came up with the engines and a large wad and said do it. I'm glad people try these things; as you say, makes for interesting reading, and can't wait to hear about the finished vehicle, whatever it may be!

*to which the Man said "I didn't care, I'm only building it" Laughing

Waste of good 500LC components. I remember some nutjob doing a RD730 back in the mists of time (not sure if Stan was on board for that one). That was a pointless piece of crap that destroyed itself too Laughing

Can see that point of view, when you look at the extra work involved, the extra engine components and the added width to the motor with the issues it would cause.

Add to that, the packaging problems for the induction and exhaust, possible cooling problems and even more added complexity to an RD500 motor which is already one of the most complex and sometimes fragile big two strokes anyway!

If he motor has a blow up and damages the bottom end, then it's got a set of expensive one off and irreplaceable crankcases, so would be fit for scrap only.

There's plenty of bhp potential inside an RD500 motor, and it can be taken out to 550cc without huge hassle. if you spend enough time and money on such a motor, there's 120-130 crankshaft bhp to be had. If that's not enough it's probably in the wrong type of bike!

Does seem like an awful lot of hassle to create something you can probably buy off the shelf in just as reliable form for a pretty similar weight.
