On my CB500 there is a drain hole around the petrol cap, but its full of black muddy shit to the point it barely drains.
I scraped out what I could with a plastic toothpick, can I blast down the hole with compressed air?
Or is there some kind of valve in the drain pipe that could be damaged?

Cheers

Should be alright but you may want to put some rag in the filler hole to prevent blowback crap ending up in the tank.
Can you check the drain tube coming off the bottom of the tank to see if it is open ended or the capped variety that you need to take the cap off once in a blue moon to allow draining? (Obviously remove cap prior to giving it a blow job!!)

Cool, good thinking on the rag on top, that could very well have ended with me stripping the carbs on this thing sooner than desired. Thumbs Up

There is 1 hose with a cap on the end of it, but oddly as I was pokin at the top part there was a few tablespoons of water that hit the ground, so I assume the capped one is a diff hose? Question

Cover the filler hole and using pipe cleaners or something long thin and flexible should clear the blockage

Nopes.
Do not use pipe cleaners, you will only compact the crud even more and risk puncturing your tank if there is any rust in the drain.

Blow from the bottom up, most crud will have entered from the top.

Interesting, reckon rag over hole to catch it, or cling film the petrol filler hole and let the tiny geiser of black shit erupt?

Just thinking, your method seems the most valid so far, it 100% seems to have entered from the top down, but I better be damn sure I get the right hose at the bottom end.
...I've never Shot compressed air up a crankcase breather before, can't imagine it would do it much good. Laughing

Also, who the hell even still knows where to get pipe cleaners in this day and age? ...damn Hippies Karma

On another note, I was stood over the open filler cap for some time, carefully picking at my hole.
Even with the usual whisky and stuff taken into account... I feel mega dizzy. Wasted Sick Dance! Puke Pale

It's a naked bike, the tank can be drained and the drain pipe blasted and put back on within 15mins.

Also because the tank will be upside down, there will be minimal risk of crud entering the tank.
I would still stuff a rag in there though.

Find the overflow hose.

Get compressor with blowgun.

put blowgun nozzle onto overflow hose.

Pull trigger.

Clean garage ceiling.

Or just don't overfill your tank.

Does that hole not mainly drain rainwater? If I remember correctly most fuel caps not only have no seal to prevent water from passing the 'outer' rim of the cap but even if they did water can still pass through the hinge set-up so needs somewhere to drain off.

If you overfill the tank, that's where the fuel goes out. Maybe drains rainwater too?

Under the rear right of the tank there are two pipes. Maybe one is a fuel overflow and the other is for draining water?

As far as I can find from le google and haynes, it mainly drains water ...It also drains urine when I piss in it. Razz
The water channel I get around the filler hole was my original problem, then I saw the black shit.
Before I picked some shit out and took the photo, it was about to overflow water into the tank.

Already missing one thing about the CG, removable cap, so no channel to fill. Smile

Cheers for all the replies, maybe once I sort this there will be no more water getting to the float bowls.

Probably worth doing drain holes in air box (and pipes if there are any) at the same time!
