PostPosted: 11:01 - 24 Dec 2014    Post subject: Multiple bikes confuse speed camera? Reply with quote

I was riding back from work yesterday at 5pm (dark at this point in the evening) up the A3211 in Central London up towards Tower Hill, in a group of 5 bikers, me being back right in a '2 in front 3 behind' (kind of) formation.

We all went through this 30mph speed camera at fairly the same speed - just before the speed lines on the ground I glanced down at my clocks and was braking gently and I 100% definitely saw 29mph on the speedo.

Kept it steady as usual and as I'm getting to the end of the lines I see two bright flashes from behind me. I glance down again and see 30mph on my clock so I know it wasn't me.

Thing is, there weren't many other vehicles around, and all the bikes around me seemed to be at same speed Confused

Arrow So my question: Could the multiple number plates / vehicles all going through at pretty much the same time confused the camera?

We all spoke briefly about it at the next set of red lights all saying "Wasn't me!" and "F*ck it!", but I'm still wondering. I know for sure it wasn't me though Very Happy

TL;DR - Went through a speed camera with 4 other bikers at speed limit, camera flashed twice.

I am sure I read/heard somewhere if there are more than one vehicle in a shot they cannot prosecute as they cannot prove who is doing the speeding. But multiple vehicles can set off a camera.

...But the lines on the road are used to indicate the speed, so, once it is reviewed it will prove how fast you were going. So, if you're going 30 you'll be fine.

Thumbs Up Very Happy

Hi.. They can prosecute an individual in a group. There are 2 pictures taken at a specific time interval, and 2 photographs produced. The distance each vehicle has traveled can be measured using the 2 pictures. So if one bike has been speeding it can be nailed down in the photo. However, due to there being a number of bikes it may have fooled the camera, when actually no one was speeding. Either way, you are 100% sure you were doing 29mph as you said. So, no drama!

I thought that was a 20mph limit?

edit, I take that back, sure I'd heard that Lower Thames Street had a 20 slapped on it a while back.

Piss off Laughing But seriously, no.

Read here.

The whole of the City of London has a 20mph speed limit except for the A3211 between Victoria Embankment and Byward Street

Ok so multiple vehicles can set it off. Useful to know. Wasn't totally aware of this 20mph across London though Shocked

There's another camera on the opposite side and down a bit - could it have been that one? If not then it could have been set off by a vehicle on the opposite side heading towards. Might be the camera is set up incorrectly too, the one on Streatham high street used to go off at 15mph for a while.

The one in the picture has a grey front-facing camera right in front of you which I think is supposed to snap the driver's face. Did that not go off?

Hi

Had cameras pop off a couple of times when doing under the speed limit for no apparent reason. The little RS125 is the one that managed it.

In theory they should double check the speed camera readings with the markings on the road (in practice they don't seem to always bother)

All the best

Keith

Nope, it was definitely a flash over my left shoulder (camera on my side of the road), and no I don't think the front-facing one went off either. It happened behind me though so can't be sure! I turned over my shoulder to look and all the bikers were doing the same.

But yes, as Keith and others have said, I was doing under the limit so will be fine if they do the readings from the lines. Just a WTF moment when it happened and had to double check myself Embarassed

Also, just realised, looking at the photo - I was at the point of the third lampost along when it flashed - and the camera is a fair way back from that point... so could have been a vehicle behind us all perhaps. Who knows Laughing

Nope, not a thing. I would be very surprised if I do to be honest, I know for 100% I was doing 29mph exactly and having gone through the same camera again the day after I'm also pretty sure at the point I saw the flashes I was already past the final line Thumbs Up

Reminds me of a great way of getting a photo post card home without any outlay.

1) Get Friend's (victim's) vehical reg
2) Write it onto cardboard
3) Hold it up in front of a TFL congestion zone camera whilst smiling and waving.
4) When the friend (victim) registers a disagreement as their vehical was hundreds of miles away on the day concerened, they get sent a picture of you waving.
5).....
6) erm, probably get discharged from hospital.
