Honda CG125 Spark issue

Hi guys,

I've done a good search for a similar issue and read up on a lot, have tried a few things, still with no luck! So thought id start my own thread for some advice! Smile

I have a 1984 CG125 (6v kickstart), that i bought a few weeks ago as a 'non-runner'.

The bike doesnt have spark and wont run. I've replaced the coilpack, condensor, plug cap, plug. I have been through the earth's etc and checked the points condition and gap.

I have tried unplugging the black/white wire off the ignition switch (i think this bypasses the switch if its faulty?) With no luck.

When testing continuity, both sides of the points (fixed and moving) are constant earth when open or closed, with ignition on or off - is this an issue? Does this tell me if somethings shorted out?

I've tried to undo the flywheel nut to inspect the stator area, but in top gear and on rear brake the engine turns over still before the nut slackens.

If anyone can help or advise it'd be very appreciated, im losing enthusiasm now and feel a bit pathetic that i cant get one of the most 'simple' bikes to work!!

Certainly sounds like a short. If the points are in the open position and still earthing they have either lost or been reassembled without the insulting washer/s or perhaps either the spring or connector on the end of the points wire is touching the back plate.

You will need to lock the flywheel to remove the nut, and there are several ways to do this.

Push a large screwdriver through one of the inspection holes, taking care not to damage the coils, to lock the flywheel to the backing plate.

Use a Flywheel Locking Bar - a flat bar with 2 pegs that engage with the inspection holes.

If all else fails, you could remove the spark plug and carefully feed in some nylon rope into the cylinder to stop the engine turning.

Also check the condenser - they can sometimes fail 'closed-circuit'.

As mentioned it has a new coilpack, condensor, cap and plug, so hopefully none of that new stuff is faulty!

A local small bike/scooter mechanic mentioned that if the battery is dud, it wont spark. 'People think you dont need a battery to start - but you do', is this true? I'll order a battery just to be sure, but ive seen mixed opinions on this.
