So a taxi parked at a taxi rank closes one of the busiest roads in London?

Genius.

A Police officer smashed the back window?

"To get a better look at the back seat"

He'll be getting an award for bravery then?

I agree. Then maybe we can vandalise motorcycles parked in motorcycle bays for abusing the privilege as well or maybe bluebadge holders as all disbled people are just abusing the privilege of bring disabled.

Really, did you think before posting?

Can we all please focus on the fact that thanks to the eagle eyed vigilance of citizens, and the prompt, proportionate actions of the Metropolitan Police, literally millions of innocent lives were saved.

Make Britain Great Again!

Oddly yes I did read it but as I don't know if it's a rest or refreshment rank I didn't whine.

One should also keep in mind motorcyclists regularly park in the middle of the road there so as to not get tickets so I'm really not that bothered by a taxi overstaying.

It wasn't a taxi driver, and the vehicle wasn't a taxi, as it didn't have a taxi license.

Looks like losing a window is the only trouble the driver got into. He got away lightly IMO, just for the nuisance factor - it's close to an ideal setup for a car bomb. I don't think the police overreacted either.

By Jove, that vehicle doesn't have a small, trivially forged piece of plastic on it! As everyone knows, The Terrorists are scrupulously honest and never resort to deception, so SHUT DOWN LONDON!

It wouldn't be that hard to turn a car door handle into a bomb switch.

Trivial if you trigger off courtesy lights coming on.

I was in Manchester city centre minutes before the IRA bomb went off, whilst the police were evacuating. Mrs bamt was working on Deansgate, and helped deal with those who were wounded by flying glass from all the shop windows that went out about a quarter of a mile away from the bomb. This is not nice stuff, it's not just a puff of smoke and a bit of a bang. If that officer genuinely thought there may be threat then yes, it was a very brave (maybe foolhardy) thing to do.

So, he breaks the glass.

Then what?

Spots bomb, leaps through window like a panther, defuses it with his bootlaces, is promoted to lead secret StarGate program?

Probably.

I didn't say it was sensible - frankly if they thought it really was a bomb then it should have been a bomb-squad job to deal with it. Let them trash the guy's cab, preferably with a controlled explosion Smile

I think they just break the glass for shits and giggles (read - to piss off the vehicle owner), I watched a very similar scenario from on top of the museum once, the whole of Exhibition Road was closed because somebody had parked a Luton with pro Iran signage all over it it right outside the main entrance.

Judging by the way they were walking around the van, it didn't feel like they felt it was a real threat. It also suffered the broken window and clip 'round the ear for the driver.

Didn't read that far but explains the lack of plate on the back.

This just makes me wonder why the Police didn't simply lift it and take it down to Blackwall yard, maybe wanted something to break up the boredom.

This isn't a case of an off duty black cab driver, it's a prick who bought a black cab and parked it in a taxi bay,

Cheeky tenner on Stephen Fry anyone?

Nice of them to update the story....

So how do they get away with parking there, given its a taxi rank and they are not driving a taxi?

Would be nice to see one of the stores take a private prosecution for loss of earnings, or the police for the costs involved Laughing

It mentions about not having to pay the congestion charge?

[ute]Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles are exempt from paying the Congestion Charge when actively licensed with London Taxi and Private Hire (TPH). The exemption for Private Hire Vehicles only applies when undertaking private hire bookings.
A vehicle will be removed from the register of exempt vehicles on the surrender, expiry or revocation of the license.
[/quote]

Or are they just hoping it wont get picked up?
