People pay more to go to psychiatrists, with about the same amount of scientific evidence backing their methods.

Fuckin' charlatans.

I live in quite a high Asian/African population area, so I keep getting cards thru my door for Djinn Bubaji or Mr Boombastic or some other such twaddle, promising all manner of psychic and emotional healing abilities.

They make good roach material.
That's all I'm sayin' Rolling Eyes

I see them advertise on gumtree now and again. TBH I would just treat them as unqualified psychological health professionals.

There's a BIG variation between psychotherapist counsellor therapist most prominent in terms of cost.

psychotherapist £100-300 for 30 mins
counsellor £25-50 30 mins
therapist £25-100 30 mins.

Its entirely true that maybe people just need someone to talk to and give them advice, or even just to listen to their problems.

I'm not knocking the "talking therapy" thing, cos I've found it surprisingly useful myself earlier this year, even though I thought it wasn't working, when in fact it just gave me space to think things out a bit, and get a grip of myself.

But I think its people's actual gullibility in the voodoo items: jars of water with bits of burnt paper in them, that sort of thing, which does my nut in.

Having said that, I'm fascinated with that whole side of things. Why DOES that jar of water represent some important process for people? It's not in any way different than a piece of round unleavened bread with a cross printed on it, is it now.

I think that in many cases making someone talk about their problem crystallises what the issue actually is. When you know what's really causing you issues then it's easier for you to fix the issue. I suspect that 'counsellors' are just as successful as psychiatrists on this point (and cheaper). Yes I have strong abandonment issues, please don't leave me!

As hellkat says, quite popular amongst immigrant communities (African round my way). I could say something quite intolerant about how we'd moved beyond all this BS and now we're importing it back in... but I won't Wink

I'm guessing that communication has taken a beating over the last few "Interweb Years" where emotions can't be shared so easily?

It's the financial aspect that doesn't sit well for me. I had a friend once paying someone a lot of money to help her get through....what's it called? Repressed Memory Syndrome? Something like that. I came to the conclusion it was a scam.....quite an elaborate one too.

I'm hoping to find out a bit more over Xmas....see what the score is Thinking

You'll get more for your bang for your buck just by reading the text on the wee slip inside a Christmas Cracker. Smile

You only have to pray to The Baby Jesus that you pull the bigger half. Wink

Now the pub isn't the centre of local community (well done to the government for taxing pubs to death) people don't often find themselves with people they want to confide in, in the same way they did on a quiet evening in the pub. We all need to talk to someone friendly outside our close circle, on certain occasions/issues. Not to the level you would with a 'professional' but left to fester, problems can grow out of all proportion.
I remember 30+ years back having a pub chat with a mates dad about another friend who'd come out. It was still quite unusual then and as a young lad I didn't know how to deal with it. Not a big problem, and not an in-depth chat but quickly sorted in my mind over what to do....
Obviously beat him up and graffiti his house.....(JOKE!!!).
Similar happened when a friend died of cancer. Just a quick talk which allowed me to put the event into the appropriate mental compartment, rather than dwell on it for too long.

They advertise daily in the back of the metro, they live in the shithole parts of the city too. Guessing that's mainly where their demographic live.

Psychics aren't going out of business anytime soon either, see people asking for "good ones" or pushing them on facebook often enough. Again, I think that's a case of enjoying people telling them what they want to hear.

Tracking's off on that trolley, and the mast to lever ratio is wrong, the stool will hit the bank. Migth be lucky and roll them head-first into the pond but then it would probably pull the whole lot over too.

I agree.

I think its an 16th century Daily Mail illustration to help explain a concept to the masses.

I thought the seagulls were cool. It's clear proof that seagulls don't give a shit.

Can you find any objective evidence that paying money to talk about dem feels has a significant positive benefit?

I'd want to see it compared to:

1) Talking to nobody.
2) Talking to an invisible sky fairy.
3) Talking to a budgie.
