I recently picked up a Yamaha SR 125 on an 83 plate, with what seem to be smaller handlebars to pictures I've seen though google images, and the stock wing mirrors are useless.

So I took them off the bike till I can get some stock bars, or alternative style mirrors.

My question is, it it legal to drive/ride a bike without wing mirrrors? I know the bike doens't need them to pass an MOT but I'm worried it might get some copper with a stick up his arse all hairy. I've googled around and found nothing other then the usually internet bullshit

"IIRC No you don't need them, but cop can be picky."

Such bullshit answers on forums. So do you guys know, and have a link to legislation and laws at hand?

Thanks

Edit, whilst I'm at it does anyone know where I can get shorter cables for the bike, as the cables are exessivly longer then they need to be.

Thanks again

C&U 1986 S33 Mirrors

5 A two-wheeled motor cycle with or without a sidecar attached = No requirement
.

You can try routing the cables around the wrong side of the headstock, i.e. instead of the accelerator cable running forward from the engine and then right to the throttle control, first run it to the left, loop it over or in front of the headstock, and then to the right.

Thank you for the link, very helpful.

With regards to the cables, I've tried this and the levers became really heavy, the clutch required to hands to open. The front brake had no play, and the trottle turning the bars to the right closed the throttle completly starving the engine and it stopped running.

Perhaps I just need to find a better way to route the cables.

Thanks for you help and for the link

Riding without mirrors is a surprisingly freeing experience. Focus on the future rather than what's in the past Laughing

Their absence may also prompt a rider to do, do more, and possibly 'better' rear observations... useful if you are on L's and using them as intended to practice for tests.

Another bizarrely 'liberating' experience caused by vehicle 'defect' is a snapped speedo cable... There is an initial paranoia, that accompanies the sensation, meanwhile, dulled Hazard Perception senses are re-heightened.. usually by the first village radar sign, and you get the thousand yard stare back, looking for yellow boxes, WHICH then refine dulled panic reaction reflexes and emergency braking techniques.. there then follows a period in which the imperative to buy a new speedo cable, vies with the dilemma of not replacing the speedo cable.. as you start to spend more time, gong slower, taking the time to see what's going on around you, after you lance down at the un-moving speedo needle, out of habit, for the umpteenth time and wondering why you bothered.... you KNOW its not going to tell you anything. and DID you really want to know ANYWAY?

We could probably live without a LOT of 'equipment' actually... indicators for example.... do they even fit them to German cars?

Exactly. My RXS100 has no mirrors and does prompt more lifesaver checks.

That's bloody clever. Are you a time traveller?! 83 plate doesn't get released until September 2033!

Edit:
It has come to my attention that you could mean a 1983 plate, so suffix Y or prefix A.

If you get stock bars, you'll probably need the longer cables again.

Very good sir! Very good! It would appear I have been misleading you, a look at the green slip, suggests first resigstion was in 1982.

I'm actaully enjoying the riding postion on the bike. Looking at images I don't think I'd like mini cruiser postion. I don't think I'll be getting stockbars any time soon.
