In stores tomorrow

https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thursday-8-january/product-detail/ps/p/tap-and-die-set-1/

Tap and die set is not something I currently have but wouldn't mind one for occasional use. Not expecting mega quality for £15 but should be good enough for what I need.

Anyone have any experience of them?

Might be ok for emergency use but I wouldn't want to rely on it for anything important. Not a whole lot you can do once you've snapped a tap in a part but throw it away and start again, not a tool I'd choose to skimp on.

Edit: just to clarify I have no experience of the aldi one, I just mean cheap taps in general.

Must admit I hadn't really considered the potential of writing off a part, had just figured more a case of not doing a job very well or not lasting very long.

Maybe I'll give it a miss then, it's one of those things I'd like to have around but can't justify the expense of a decent set for how often I'd use it.

I bought it last year.

I've used the die to sort out the threads on some bolts I've cut to size, it works fine for that. I've also used it to clean up some gummy threads from bolts. Not tried to use the tap yet, though the CG needs a handlebar mount tapping ...

It may be ok but I'd be careful
I bought a cheap tap and die set from Ebay and
surprise surprise, it was utter shite.
Upon close inspection, the taps were badly machined
The tap wrench and die stock was made of monkey metal or chocolate
Using a fully opened die to clean threads removed far too much material and ruined the bolt.
Tapped holes were slack on new bolts
All in all a waste of money and possibly worse as a bad tap can fuck up or snap in the hole

The Aldi set may be much better for all I know but I'd keep the
reciept and examine it closely and do some tests to see if its fit for purpose.

[old fart mode]
It were all fields round here when I were a lad and you used three
taps to thread a hole
A taper, a second and a plug tap.

We made us own entertainment in them days
Chips were fourpence a bag in proper newspaper too
and crisps had a bag of salt in them
Olive oil? we had to go to chemist for that !
blether rant grumble fart cough fart blether
[/old fart mode]

Ditto, except might have been 2 years ago.
As said Aldi one is usable and I was able to fix up and rethread various fixings that had to be drilled.

Used the drill bit and tap in a cheap ebay m6 set recently. It worked well.

I bought the Lidl one recently, but haven't used it.

If you planning to cut new threads and make new nuts & bolts then forget it, if you just want to clean up the odd bold or thread then they will be ok. Handy if you restoring an old bike and just want to clean up the threads on bolts you might struggle to buy new versions of.

I turned a cheap bench into a chair and rethreaded the support rod so it was shorter

Check out Machine Mart, there's a good Metric set around the £26 mark, HS steel not 'High Carbon' which tend to be more brittle and easier to snap.

I've only ever used a tap/die after somethings gone tits up.

With this in mind, I'd not take risks with low quality tools stuffing up my last chance of salvaging said part.

Agreed.
I have a cheapo metric set that I acquired someplace and discovered almost immediately that the pitch on matching tap and die was not the same, despite both being stamped as, for example, M6 x 1.0!!!

...and the handle for the tap rounded off almost instantly, thus rendering itself useless (the die handle split later on as well)

So now I've sussed which taps and dies are the right size they are only used for cleaning threads

Bought a set last time around. I have used them on several occasions but wouldn't use them daily, I'd go for something with a more known brand name because brain-washed.

Tapped a fresh thread in the TTR when the bolt that holds the petrol tank on snapped and had to drill the remainder out and stick a new thread in, did it easily enough. Thumbs Up
