I think it depends on the terms of the original guarantee - like whether you would claim for defects against the company that made it, or the company that sold it.

In some cases, retailers act as a manufacturer's agent and offer their own warranties in addition to the manufacturer's guarantee - but whilst I would expect a retailer to honour the manufacturer's guarantee during the first 12 months, I wouldn't expect them to honour a lifetime guarantee after 12 months if the manufacturer had gone out of business.

It depends on the terms of trading applicable to the purchase.

Is that your lifetime or the lifetime of the device?

Because if the device dies, then it has no life. Therefor no guarentee Laughing

Probably the owner's life - when the charger breaks-down, it electrocutes you Smile

Not quite on topic but a similar type of thing.

Many years ago I was building a Koi pond in my garden and had a long chat with the owner of a local shop where I bought most of my bits from.
We talked about pond liners and which were best, as most pond liners have a guarantee of anything from 5-20yrs I asked is it really worth paying the extra for the 20yr version.
He was honest with me and said its all just a big con, if you have a pond liner with a 20yr guarantee and after 12 years it starts leaking you need to strip your entire pond, remove the liner and return it to the dealers that may or may not be there, they know very few people would ever go to this trouble and just use a repair kit to fix a leak, hence no-one ever claims on their guarantee so its worthless!
