Over refined?
It looks bland and yes 'boybandish'
the strings, jerky movements and crappy effects were
part of the charm.
they're just cashing in on the name.

Team America now, ( fuck yeah!) was nicely crude and OTT

From that link...
The Guardian wrote:

Anderson’s New Captain Scarlet was filmed in “hypermarionation” – a combination of CGI and motion-capture special effects....

They did and it was awful; all the episodes are on the internet, if you want to have a look.

Thing is though, this isn't about appealing to the people that watched the original, they're trying to pull in a new audience that wouldn't be interested in clunky looking puppets with strings hanging off them, so it's no great surprise that things have been radically changed.

But I do hope their technology has improved, the new Captain Scarlet looked shite 10 years ago and it hasn't got better with age.

I'm trying to think of any remake that was better than the original. There must be one but I'm struggling....

Indeed. All such films do is take an old and successful name, bastardise it, sell it to saps who like the original and the makers laugh their way to the bank. See also most sequels.

The Departed and Fistful of Dollars are good remakes but perhaps not better. They’re Japan to US/Europe ports though, a different type of remake really. However, that then opens up the door to crappy Asian horror translations, eg The Grudge, Ring, etc.

That'd be the joke.

Daphne: "Fred, do you like my new outfit?" [twirls]
Fred: "[laughs] I don't even understand that question".

By Grabthar's Hammer, it really is worth a watch.
