Hello
I am thinking about changing my chain and sprocket for golden DID Chain (look good and have good review on reliability ).

this is first time for me so I have two question that I would like help with please?

is it easier to go for an open Chain ?

can you recommend a riveting tool for a reasonable price and one that does the job?

Thank you,

Buy an open ended chain with a hard rivet link, and the "Whale Brand Chain Tool" is a beautiful piece of kit and will pay for itself within 2 uses.

Thanks for your advice

£80 on Ebay sounds bit expensive to me...

Buy cheap, buy twice. Happened to mo when my cheaper chain tool broke on the second use.

I didn't go for the Whale tool as I generally use soft links but went for this. Used it many times and makes splitting and riveting chains a doddle.

As I said, it will pay for itself. It is a joy to use and turns the job into a pleasure rather than a chore.

A dealer will charge £100 in labour to fit a C&S kit. Spend £80 on the tool, you save £20 and the next time is free.

I've not had any issues with my £18 chain tool, I grind my old chains off so no need for breaking the current one and it happily fits the link. Depends if you have access to power and a grinder where you are.

You won't need the Whale tool for a DID rivet link - they are pre-dimpled and just need spreading with something like this :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OXFORD-ESSENTIAL-MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-CHAIN-BREAKER-RIVETING-TOOL-KIT-OF-292-/201231998657?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2eda5c9ec1

Thumbs Up

Thanks for that but at an extra £20, it seem I ll be able to get top end Tool that can Break and Rivet all type of Chains and, from what I understand, "make a doddle" out if the whole exercise. an investment Mr. Green

No worries, but you can fracture the soft rivet link with the Whale tool, so no point in buying the wrong tool for an extra £20 Wink

Someone did something similar here:

https://www.triumphrat.net/1593230-post5.html

The right tool for a DID SOFT rivet link is the tool that spreads the pre-dimpled heads, the Whale tool is for a traditional HARD rivet link Thumbs Up

Type of link for Whale tool is shown here:
