Just a general question really, does anyone else apart from me ever think they'd like a small capacity or simple lightweight bike for summer riding to the shops and back or down to the pub etc?

I know there's people with very cool such vehicles, you've got Binge with the Honda Chaly, Fladdem with an MT5, and someone had a Suzuki B120 on here, then there's the folks like Iain with tuned mopeds, and the pit bikes etc.

I quite fancy either a Kawasaki KSR80 for the above use, or maybe a little resto project in the shape of a Vespa PK 80/100/125? There's even times I wouldn't mind one of those American style Cushman scooter's with the rigid rear end and a Briggs&Stratton side valve mower motor fitted.

If I had some spare cash, sure a nice compact bike that works well around town.

https://img3.findthebest.com/sites/default/files/778/media/images/2014_BMW_HP4_1137050.jpg

Add top box, tank bag and muffs for utilitarian uses, of course.

I wouldn't mind making my pit bike road legal, but wouldn't choose it for riding in town.

I like those funny msx125s, but can't justify one with having the vanvan and the cb125. The vanvan is fun, but you have to adjust to the fact that it will never do more than a very, very modest bimble. If you *can* make that adjustment, it's ace.

190bhp? that should be reasonable for a gentle commute through city traffic, and have enough power to get up to 25-30mph once every 3miles or so? Laughing

Would the fairings stay on this one though, and you've not mentioned huge rear sprockets yet for some reason? Wink

G, You just have to be different don't you Laughing

If I ever get round to getting a car I imagine I will sell the CB500 and possibly get a little sub-125cc bike that I can use for a bit of fun around town and possibly to save a bit of fuel on my short commute.

I've always fancied...

...but a CG125 is probably a much better option.

Fairings stayed on the GSXR and it was fine on standard gearing.
(Wanted to stick cheap chinese fairings on ideally, to keep originals in good nick.)

Doing under a third revs at 30mph with enough go to wheelie off the throttle makes an excellent town bike Smile.

Riding a CB500 at 125cc speeds would probably see decent enough fuel economy to not justify the costs of a second bike.

My road legal pit bike, not a town bike, well, not if I was stopping anywhere in town without a big chain or someone to stand with it while I was doing a thing. Even my 250's don't get left for long and they have steering locks and ignition keys and can't be picked up quite so easily.

The MT5 is my weapon of choice though. Laughing It's probably my most favourite-est bike ever. Thumbs Up My cub is quite good as well, just not as fun. The pub bike is my fixie, because the drunken mind forgets you can't free-wheel and leads to much amusement by all.

Although I have been thinking about Kwak AR80's again. One of my uncles had one when I was younger, I quite fancied it. Laughing

IT'S AN ADDICTION!

I'd like a little 2 smoke ped like Iain did up. I've got a 4 stroke one with a BBK that's great for local stuff but a noisy little 2 smoke is just so much more appealing. Underseat storage and no clutch/gears to faff about with is great for just popping out on a quick shop run.

MZ ETZ 125 is a great town bike as is the old CZ175, reliable low revving long stroke motors with enough go in them, easy on fuel and a gift to work on.

What bikes do you have? I know you have a KMX 125 and I think a 200? Neither of which I would consider an old mans Sunday polisher...

I'm not sure how/why a little bike or scooter is better for going down the shops? For me, I'd still have to get it out of the garage, get my gear on, ride to the shops, park it up etc etc. I can do that on the Fazer.

Or do you mean you can just jump on it without gear on (which many scooter riders seem to do)? I could still do that on mine, but I wouldn't choose to.

Having never owned a scooter on the road I don't see where the added convenience is?

I've owned/ridden a variety of little bikes, including 3 c90s etc and I don't either.

And my suggestion WAS actually serious - if I got a long term decently paying job that needed a through-town commute, that'd be my choice.

Not really 'getting rid' as such, just need to clear the garage out a bit and moving out soon so will most likely only have 1 bike coming with me. Will probably advertise soon for a punt, if no bites then wait until Spring.

These are just my reasons (and not all are logical)

Big bike gets chained up properly. Ped gets a crappy cable lock that takes seconds to unlock (extremely low vehicle crime area).

Ped burns feck all fuel. I actually can't remember when I last filled it, though that may be tramadol clouding my mind, but in seriousness even with an 80cc bore kit on it takes a long time to empty the tank.

I just chuck on a lid and gloves rather than worry about other gear, I know this is illogical as I can fuck myself up just as bad on the ped as on the ZZR.

It's a cheap piece of shit so I don't mind parking it in silly places, filtering it through stupidly tight gaps, etc.

It's actually fairly amusing rolling along on tiny little wheels.

Can get a lot of shopping under the seat and hanging off the hooks.

Wife uses it so it's there anyway, me using it is no real extra expense (infact it was cheaper to insure in my name with her as named rider than if it was just insured for her).

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

More steering lock than a sports bike, lower centre of gravity, more storage options without turning it into courier bike or full-width tourer with side panniers. This makes it better in heavier traffic in London. I can count on one hand the number of geared bikes I see on my commute every year that go faster than I do.

Another thing: I can fit a 2.5m 19mm Almax chain underneath my seat, where the weight is centralized and it doesn't bounce around. The best place to put it on a geared bike that doesn't have a fake-tank storage (like NC700) is tightly attached to the pillion seat, but that is way more hassle than underneath the seat, and the weight is still higher up.

As to gear, I don't wear anything more protective than armoured jacket, gloves and normal boots on the scooter - the amount of time spent over 40mph is very low, and if you have a crash, it's probably going to be <20mph (none of my scooter crashes have worn through my jeans). I keep the scooter locked up outside too, no garage to get it out of.

If you reach over 60mph when popping down to the shops, then you probably don't live in a dense enough urban environment for a scooter to make sense. If there are a lot of long straight multi-lane roads with timed traffic lights, then sports bike acceleration also makes more sense.
