Hurts to ride the burger as its heavy and its not helped that the easy gp project stillwwon't start

So I'm struggling anyway

And today riding along at 35mph in a nsl get to a turning and a car pulls out

I managed to avoid it but it shit me UP enough to think fuck it i was abot ten foot away with high viz jacket and ywellow lid

I have a wife and kid

I need to be here for them

It was closer then any other near miss so

Don't drive wtf do I do

Tldr

Can't drive and bikes are dangerous due to idiots in cars

Take it easy fella confidence is everything, I have a dodgy hip which hurts like a bastard if I get yanked by the bike, I've had to pace my self and adjust my riding style to over cautious at times.

Would it be worth trying to build confidence with a smaller/lighter machine ?

Being nervous after a crash is relatively normal, it just takes time to get confident again. After I had a crash where I *almost* ended up smacking the car but ended up laying the bike down instead (not intentionally) I felt extremely vulnerable and wondered if I could enjoy biking like I used to. It actually feels worse each time after the previous crash, like it adds to the whole feeling of not being safe and feeling too vulnerable. "Well I said I wouldnt do it again and i fucking did it again" sort of thing. The amount of what-ifs that ran through my head for the weeks after lol.

Few months later I'm still a bit more weary than before but I'm back up to confidence and enjoy it thoroughly. I don't think you fully get over it, which tbh is probably a good thing, confident but more cautious and all that.

I also think it depends on the severity of the crash, if your off was very bad I can totally understand how you might feel that biking is too dangerous, especially the fact that it's compounded by your responsibilities (kids, wife, etc).

Maybe taking a break from riding is a good thing to do also. In that time you can get a car license and ride again in a few months to see if you miss it or still don't like how it feels.

Between the point of quitting riding and obtaining a car license, if you can use public transport then endure that for as long as it takes.

After that break go for a test ride and if you're uncomfortable, stick to the car, otherwise if you miss riding, jump back on the bike.

I had a scare as well on the way home, for the first time accelerating actually worked better than throwing out the anchors and slamming the brakes on. Rarely, I think, accelerating into a problem will help, but the car was so close to me on the right, that it was better to wang the throttle open and shoot past in front of it than slam the brakes on and skid into the side of it.

At least in a car, if that happens, you will have some shielding. Sad

Everything is dangerous.

EVERYTHING

Let's face it, ~6,000 people every year end up in casualty because of their trousers............

If you let the paranoia get to you then you'll end up a shut-in. Which is also dangerous - you'll get fat and die of blubber poisoning, or even worse you'll end up on a channel 4 documentary when it takes 8 firemen or a fork-lift to carry your bloated stinking rotten corpse out through a hole in the wall.

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/08/16/article-0-001BA6BF00000258-451_468x322.jpg

Oh, and if you think cars are a safe mode of transport

https://locksparkfarm.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/car_crash.jpg

That's alright, take the bus instead...

https://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01792/Egypt-Bus-Crash_1792936c.jpg

Oh, I'd better use the train:

https://www.mlawfirm.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Train-Accident-6.jpg

Well, balls to that - I'm flying everywhere:

Hmmmm.

tl;dr Life is so dangerous it comes with a death sentence.

You could learn to drive; better would be to learn to use the road safely - and that includes avoiding other people's incompetence.

Get a copy of Motorcycle Roadcraft to start.

My first serious crash was when a guy shot out of a side road and t-boned me - I wasn't badly hurt, but the bike was a mess and so were my nerves.

Second one, I pitched the bike into a corner and the front end washed out - ended up in hospital with a mashed up ankle.

Third time, I hit a parked car swerving to avoid a guy who didn't see me and was trying to cross the road to park on my side - a week in ITU and life changing injuries were the result.

That was all 33 years ago and I still flinch when I see someone approaching a junction too quick, I'm still not mad about fast bends and I'm still extremely wary around people who look like they aren't sure what they're doing.

I think my experiences have made me a better and more aware rider (if a lot slower) and they have definitely stopped me from having other accidents, on several occasions.

You get over it and you learn from it, if you've got any sense.

somewhere in the way back there is my post about getting back on a bike after a life affecting injury caused by falling off a bike(imagine that)i now have about 30% use of my left shoulder.
anyway long story short,i was crap on a bike for ages (probably didnt help i decided to come back on an old r1.
then someone ran me over on a roundabout and although the bike was destroyed(no harm to me) i realised i liked riding bikes went out and got an fz1 and started to love it again.flat bars helped the shoulder cope and all was good.

i realise this is no help.
but the point is simple .
do you want to ride?
if yes then do it
if no then dont.

I had a big cash a few months ago that was close to costing me my life, it happens. 2 months on I was back on the road, back on the continent.

People pull out and are twats in general, you have to learn to ride in a way it affects you least, most things are avoidable.

Doing 1000 miles a week, i get many instances but have yet to t-bone a car.

You can be killed by bin lorry, a terrorist or heart attack out of the blue, you can't live life avoiding everything that could possibly kill you

I started off fast and furious with several crashes and ultimately slowed down but still had crashes so I speeded up again using past experiences to avoid most of the idiots on the road.

I was once taken out while riding a Dayglow orange CX500B, with a red helmet and yellow Hi Viz vest on a beautiful sunny day so you sort of resign youself to the fact that it will happen at some point and the best you can hope for is damage limitation. (absolutely no colour co-ordination in the 80s. Shocked )

Still had a season ticket for A&E Shocked and the wife hated me being out on the bike but needs, must and the kids always thought it was hilarious........ "Mum, dad's got a broken shoulder / ankle / wrist / foot" etc etc.

The worst bit is physically getting back on the bike again after a smash so just slowly ease yourself back into it and you'll soon be flying about again with spring just around the corner. Wink

A bit of MTFU and don't make a big deal of it.

I mangled my spine last May, still on max dose tramadol amongst other things..... just got back on soon as I could I didn't let it bug me.

Bust my elbow in September. Waited a bit over 2 weeks and then just gaffa taped my hand to the throttle.

Longer you stay away from riding the bigger deal your mind will hype it up to be, so the more nervous you will be which in turn will cause issues.

Like people said already you could die in any one of many stupid/weird/wonderful/amusing ways so just go live your life.

and don't do 35 in an NSL..... he may have pulled out because you were going so slowly he thought he had time.
