What weather would you ride in?

Hi all,

I've been planning to ride down to Andover today (from Hereford) to go see my Brother and his family, but reports from a friend that the roads are awful this morning, and strewn with crashed cars from the slippery conditions are making it look more and more likely I'm going to be having a slow, noisy, expensive trip in the landy.

Just how bad are the conditions along the A417/9 today, and what do you ride in?

Main roads aren't too bad just think twice before filtering down the hatched area what is full of ice and take extra time I rode 40 mile 6am this morning.

I recommend a hot bath before hand and something hot to eat.

I'm 8 miles from Andover and at this end it's lovely. We had a light dusting of snow last night, which washed away with a bit of morning rain and now the sun is out, no ice on the roads.

Ive just driven from North Herts to Bedford (Potton / Sandy) and there was no grit nor salt on the roads. Not trying to be alarmist but I would maybe wait a couple of hours? Sun is shinning

lol Well I'm going to pack my panniers, have a bacon sandwich and get going I think.

I'm a bit cautious since I popped out in the landy this morning and as I braked at the end of the street it did a short skid (On the road, not my pants). Nothing to be bothered about, but I thought Christ don't fancy this on the bike. Having said that, the main roads should be well cleared by about 1130 when set off, so I'll just ride carefully. I give it 5 miles before I wish I had heated grips.

Be sensible, be cautious and go get the experience of riding in adverse weather conditions, it will hone your skills

tbh, I'd be more scared of other road users being thick rather than the weather. A drop of rain or a little snowflake seems to send people into retard mode.

200kg bikes and ice or snow just don't mix. Next winter I'm going to plan ahead and get a low, light 125 with moar knobblies, honest.

My first year of riding - any weather possible, I did temperatures below zero, snow, rain, heavy fog, thunderstorm and so on.

Now? - Nah, 15°C+ and dry, thank you.

EDIT: When I have a go on my mates MZ 150, then I do all I did the first year of riding.

When it's your only mode of transport you have little choice, even in the cold and ice I prefer it to a car though.

This is my first winter with the bike, I have been out a few times in the past couple of weeks just to give the bike a run, I've tried to wait for the salt to go and it to be warm enough there's no ice, so about 5-6 degrees iirc. Proper rides, for enjoyment I'm hanging out till we get up to double figures I think.

Any weather I'll just most probably be more observant and a little bit slower in colder weather. In fact I did a ride before 160 miles on the motorway minus figures, my hands were that cold and I was bursting for the toilet. I rushed in yanked my thermal gloves off. However could not get them back on again (which is why I hate thermal gloves).

Que me riding the last 90 miles in my work rigger gloves these below, anyone that has used them will tell they aren't very protective or warm. However better than nothing. After riding on a CG125 you get used to riding in bad weather with poor headlights. I've actually found some of the best rides in the worst weather just makes you feel more alive.

I'll put up with some really awful weather on the bike to avoid spending an hour and a half on the tube. I get to work warmer and drier (my bike gear is a lot better than my civvies) in 35 minutes on the bike.

Lots of ice or snow is about the only thing that will drive me on to the Central Line. I've used the tube twice this year so far because of freezing fog/ice. But gale-force winds? Lashing rain? Temperatures of -6 or lower? I'm still on the bike.

Palm trees in Peebles, Rogerborg ??

I used to do a Saturday morning run to either Hawick, Selkirk or Galashiels Rugby grounds to pick up the half time film for the BBC.
A second biker would pick up the full time film so they could show the first half highlights and the second half if the biker made it back

I recall making it safely to Hawick in sub zero temperatures with white frost coating everything, Palm trees included only to go flat on my back in the carpark. (It's right next to the river so gets very icy.)

Another time as I struggled to see in a proper pea souper I was overtaken by the BBC Volvo (camera men et all) bombing past with their foglights and a cheery wave........

Those were the days

Smiler, I also found my self bursting for the toilet after a 250 mile trip to Sheffield and after dropping the parcel, I dived in only to find that my hands were so cold, they couldn't get a grip on my zip and I half peed my self. It was quite warming until I got out on the road again.

The 417/419 was fine yesterday when I went to Newbury from Cheltenham to fetch the R1.

As for conditions - ridden in snow and I don't mind it! Always ride with the expectation that you WILL bin your bike and try to be smooth as possible!

Now that I have a car and winter tyres too, the moment I have to wear winter gloves, I'm in the cage!

Coldest i've ridden in is -6 C from guildford to heathrow at 4am, only half an hour ride usually but it took an hour because I was terrified of slithering on some unseen ice.

Not too terrified to pass up on free airport parking though.

Every day, first couple of days in the snow this week, not too bad, stops filtering so much, and kicking backwards into the parking space in the works carpark was funny has you like.. it's bike, cold, cheap, cold, fast, cold or 1970 bus cold, expensive, cold, slow, cold for my morning choices so bike everyday my first winter though and im way into the sunny south, don't really do winter down here..

Recently been in black ice nightmare. Rear spinning up ay 20mph... On a bike that aint got the power to pull ma bit skin back.

And in the snow a few days ago.
