Hello fellow riders,

I have just become an owner of a beautiful YZF R125 and naturally I want to keep it as safe as possible.

The YZF is now kept outside my block, it is chained to a street lamp with the:

- Oxford Monster 14mm chain
- Unknown brand chain obtained from previous owner, looks about 16mm.

I also use a XENA XX6 disc lock on the front wheel, the alarm from this disc lock has been thrown away by previous owner as parallel with many opinions it proved useless.

The bike is also covered with... A cover.

That's it for the security at the moment.

I also want to fit an alarm onto the bike however it seems like all the alarms I have looked at have major problems.

My question to you is: Is there a reliable alarm out there? Do you have an alarm on your bike which you could recommend? Rolling Eyes

Cheers.

Maybe this will do? https://www.halfords.com/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycle-security/oxford-screamer-alarm-disc-lock
However I don't really have an idea with alarms, my bike is covered in my garden and has a security light which makes an incredibly loud click when activated. Very Happy

Well it seems like those alarms are just not worth the money, I will try to find one that actually does the job though.

Otherwise just invest in an extra solid Almax chain. Most thieves will be discouraged when they see a 1.8K bike locked with 3 chains to a street lamp by the frame and wheels and a disc lock on it as well. Taking into consideration that it's parked 2 meters away from my block and busses pass by every 5/15 minutes 24/7 should let me sleep at night. Mr. Green

Mine was fine for the for the four or five months it worked and one day it just stopped responding to the key fob for no apparent reason I couldn't be arsed investigating and just left it.

Fast forward a couple of months and I think it is what drained my battery so much it wouldn't even show a neutral light the alarm was wired directly to the battery I furiously yanked the wires out at the roadside.

I didn't bother to connect it back on the battery once charged all has been fine since.

It does seem worth trying for the money and reviews are alos pretty good. I think I'll go for it.

Aye, go for an Almax chain. They're expensive but, worth it. Thumbs Up

You might want to look into the Oxford Boss Disk lock alarm too. It's not the loudest of alarms but, it's pretty difficult to cut through.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago, I hope it lives up to the high expectations I have for it.

I was too quick to buy the Oxford Monster I guess, can't really return it now, would have bought the Almax Rolling Eyes. It is a decent chain though - 14mm, Thatcham approved and Gold range from Oxford so I'll keep it for now and add the alarm SpartanX mentioned, which along with the XENA XX6 disc lock and that second bulky chain should be sufficient.

I might upgrade to an Almax at some point in the future.

I just realised that I probably won't be able to put the chain through the frame in the R125 and will have to stick to putting it through the wheel and the brake disc which will limit the effectiveness of the chain but it will have to do.

Cheers for the responses guys! Thumbs Up

Mines chained to a lamp post outside my block too. Almax required for anything more than visual deterrent. I installed a Scorpio sr-i900 alarm. things bloody amazing but its expensive.

I have had this alarm fitted to my bike for 6 years with no problems. I have also fitted 2 for friends on their bikes, and 1 on a friend's car.

Very easy to fit, and tech support (if you need it) is very helpful.

For a cheap noisy alarm get a rape alarm and attach the pull cord to the cover.... someone pulls cover off and loud noise ensues.

My ZZR came with a Cyclone/NCS alarm fitted by a previous owner. No problems
over the last 18 months.

What do you expect the alarm to achieve? Will probably keep cats from using bike as bed, its a 125 so less likely to be used as a photo prop by idiots. Are you within earshot to go running every time it goes off? Nobody else will care.

As for immobilisers, be very aware that if it screws up you can be stranded, and it won't stop a lift into a van. I have had to disable my acumen when it stopped responding to the fob, but that was not an immobiliser. And acumen fixed it.

Beware rape alarms on the cover and similar, the most likely thing to lift the cover is the wind.

Alarmed disk lock, cheap easy fit alarm only, or a tracker if the bike is a high value item.

If some scrote it determined enough, nothing will stop them nicking it. However, I think having something like an alarm that makes a lot of noise and has the possibility of attracting some attention is better than not having one.

I agree with the rape alarm being set off by the wind lifting the cover.

At the end of the day, all you can do is make it as difficult as reasonably possible for someone to rob it and hope that there's easier pickings for them, so they'll go for that one rather than yours.

Funnily enough I was going to start a thread about alarms...

Last week I found a couple of black boxes on my bike which turns out are an alarm and immobiliser, someone had cut 2 wires and removed the fuse. Not sure why they would have done that, but reading this thread has given me an idea why Thumbs Up

Anyway, I got it all working again today, having never had an alarm before I haven't got a clue how they are supposed to work.... but when armed it will allow the bike to be moved for around a minute before screaming.... also there is no telltale flashing light to say there is some kind of alarm on there is that normal?

Anyway, to the OP, It doesn't matter how much security you put on your bike, your biggest concern will probably be vandalism (or maybe that's just the scummy area I live in)

I have one of these on my YZF R125...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HAWK-X-50-MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-QUALITY-ALARMS-IMMOBILISER-PRO-SERIES-/330651267275?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4cfc59f0cb

It does the job and has never killed my battery, even after being left on for weeks with the bike getting no use.

After a couple of days switched on with no use it enters a low power state which I think helps.

My bike lives in the garden and the alarm has survived the rain, snow, ice, etc with no issues.

I know it's not going to stop anyone stealing the bike, but it should hopefully deter them and at least I should hear it if they do try stealing.

It has remote start but I didn't bother to wire up that bit, just the alarm and immobilizer parts. It was simple enough to do.

I had a Meta M357T V2 fitted to my R6 back in 2003. It is still going strong today with no real problems.

Often half the problem with alarms is how the are fitted in the first place.

As much as I'd love to keep in my my garden I don't have one and there is now way I can carry the bike all the way up to my flat Laughing , you are right is it a block of flats Wink

The bike is parked right by my window, I live on the first floor in a block of flats - I'm looking down on the bike from the window basically.

I just want to make sure I do everything I can to decrease the chances of it being stolen, and fitting an alarm will definitely help. Picking a lock or cutting a chain with a 120db siren ringing in your ear doesn't seem like the best idea. I don't expect that when the alarm stars ringing all the neighbours will run out, a helicopter and a
SWAT team will appear and take down the thief Mr. Green

At the end of the day anything can be stolen from anywhere, but by fitting the alarm I get some extra peace of mind.

Chains wise Almax are decent, although only worth using when you have something equally strong to chain it to or it might just get dragged away with the bike leaving you another £150 worse off.

I've used these for 7 years and haven't had any problems, definately recommend them for the price. Having said that if you get a decent alarmed disc lock there might not be much point having one, I only use mine when i'm parking it away from home.

May of been the batteries in the fob? I've had that happen once. The l.e.d on the fob still lit up but it didn't have enough power to activate the alarm until I replaced them.

It won't for much longer, the battery working life is ten years. Soon the siren will become intermittent, then fail completely. Later on you'll get symptoms that seem to indicate a failing starter motor or solenoid or main battery. I know as mine packed up last year.

That said, during it's designed working life it was 100% reliable.

this looks tempting, couple questions.

How sensitive is it? (or can you adjust well) I was using one of those disc locks alarms, but found in wind it would go off often, so once the batt died I didnt bother replacing

How is the range of the key fob? I park the bike on the street outside of my 2nd floor Flat, would be great if I could disarm it from my room
