I'm thinking of having a go at shooting. What's the cost? Do you have to have your own gun and all the hassle of a firearm certificate?

No, but you'll probably have to join a rifle club .
some might have certain public days but shooting these days in the UK is quite the upper class sport and is usually priced as such .

Clay pigeon may be your best bet for price and fun .

I'd go for clay pidgeon shooting somewhere if you just want to give it a go. If its solely clay pidgeon shooting and not one of the 'activity days' you can turn up and do it virtually straight away for as little £15 sometimes.

Unless you're talking air-rifles; shooting clubs are going to be wanting membership/references/putting you on probationary period and giving you instruction etc if you're wanting to use live ammunition - a lot of them can provide the firearms and ammunition though so you don't nescesarily need to be looking at buying everything yourself. Its still going to be a lot of hassle though if it turns out you don't want to carry on with it.

If you're more interested in a generic target range rather than moving-clays I would just have a go with air rifles to start with, you might find thats enough anyway and you don't need to jump through all the hoops to use air rifles with most clubs.

Did clay pigeon shooting when I was younger and used to hunt rabbits with air rifles when I was a kid. Clays are fun but I want to try rifles for more of a challenge.

Not really. I was a member of a pheasant shooting syndicate for a few years, it was all DIY, all the members were self employed tradesman types. Barely any tweed, proper working man's shoot.

Clay shooting is actually quite expensive once you get hooked, much like with bikes it gets expensive quickly when you get into it. I've dabbled in rifle shooting but I'm a lot better with shotguns so stuck to that. From what I know of rifle shooting your start up costs might look something like this:

Club membership: £75/6 months on probation
FAC: £60
cabinet: £100ish
Cheap secondhand Ruger .22LR: £300 plus more for optics
500 .22LR: £45

That's pretty much the order you do it in. Join a club, fit a cabinet and apply for your FAC. Then the FLO will pay you a visit and check you're not a butter. With your fresh FAC you can then go and buy a rifle - the costs for a .22LR listed there are at the low end, once you start chasing more accuracy or move up to centerfires it gets exponentially more expensive.

Shotgunning by contrast is easier to access and you can pick up a ratty old SG for pennies. You can expect to pay £15 or so for a round of sporting clays on a Sunday as a non member and about £135 for 1000 cartridges.

The other option is airgunnng. Cheap as chips, try googling your local HFT club.

Decent full bore rifle from £300 to the sky's the limit! To be competitive you'll be looking at the thick end of £6k easily. I shoot an old .303 SMLE, ammunition for that is £1 a round.
.22 rim fire is much cheaper overall.
My club has loan rifles so you just pay range fees and ammunition.

Have you got land you have permission to shoot over? 22 Rimfire rifles can be picked up for a couple of hundred quid off guntrader. Join your local club and have a supervised go on their 22 Rimfire rifle on their range. Shotgun Certificate is a bit simpler to get but busting clays gets boring for me after 100 shots. Sad

Holy shit that's pricey , I shoot an old rooski nagant with old surplus ammo priced at around 15p , given that UK price would be 100-200% more it's still cheaper.

.303 here isn't too cheap either .

Give clay shooting a try to see if you like it.. then look into it more..

depending on what you do it can get abit expensive, ive got a few rifles (.22/.223/.303/.308) and about 7 shotguns, the best thing you can do is join a big club like Diggle.. then you can have whatever you want (that's legal)

I was a member of a shooting range, but I got bored with it, so all of my guns are now for pest and vermin, including fox and deer control.

Found a local club site. Not any info about cost but a schedule of meets.

I would be interested in historic guns. Not sure how much is just curiosity though. You never know with this sort of thing.
