As much as I'm missing being on two wheels so much, surely going for a ride in icy conditions means it's total luck if you you end up on you're arse or not? There isnt any forward planning involved is there, if you avoid the ice you'll stay upright if not you'll be on your arse? I too nearly ended up arse over tit when I took the hound out. |

Fuck your snow and ice. |
Doesn't exempt you from the laws of physics. |
I have two vivid memories of Physics 1 v 4x4 0
Before the circular car park-cum-racetrack it is today, the M25 was opened in sections; travelling on the newly opened stretch towards Sevenoaks, the day a couple of feet of snow had fallen, I'm sitting in the inside lane, along with several other cars, doing about 25 mph, which was about as fast as it was sensibly possible to go.
As we all approach the crest of a hill, a guy in an Audi Quattro (at the time, the pinnacle of car design, WRC ubermeister) whips past us, probably doing about 60.
There I am, simultaneously thinking 'wow, this 4x4 thing is the tits', and 'what a twat', when I come over the crest and see Quattroman reaching the bend at the bottom the hill and gyrating like a spinning top, while bouncing off every barrier in sight
Then, a few years ago, I'm preparing to tackle the very steep hill I live at the top of, after freak weather conditions have put the roads under a sheet of ice topped with snow, before the gritters could get out.
As I square up to take a good run at it, Mr BMW X5 decides he's better and faster than me and overtakes; as he's bouncing off the kerb and spinning up all his wheels, I wave as I cruise past in my RWD Volvo 740 auto.
tl:dr it ain't what you've got, it's the way that you use it ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

You can avoid going down easily just have to be careful and use forward planning, I've ridden in ice and snow loads of times (only one majorly long journey though). Only once went down and that was my fault. Caught it just before it dropped, hence why no one has heard about it before. Luck does have a small part in it but it doesn't have to control you there are several things that can factor in a safe journey.
Changing your route is the most simple choice you can make if you can't wait till it's a bit warmer/not going to get warmer. There is no point going through little villages as a shortcut if you can get on a longer probably more gritted road. If it takes you extra time, it just takes extra time. Saves you dropping it.
Another change you can make is dropping your speed, yes a road with a speed limit of 70mph should be closely matched. However riding at a speed the conditions allow is more common sense. Even if you have to drop down to say 10mph in a 30 as long as you do it safely. Carry on if anyone gets inpatient behind you ignore them don't let it get at you.
Also riding on thick ice, you shouldn't touch the front brake at all and if possible not touching the back as well, front will make you go down. Keep it slow and steady, simple clear and precise gear changes nothing jerky. Also keep both feet out pretending they are skis. Believe it or not it does help and gives you more of a chance if you feel yourself slipping. On my ride last month I was going up my old street small hill, 4x4 was struggling and going all over the place I had perfect balance for once and made it up fine. ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS
