Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but I am thinking of fitting side marker lamps to make my bike more visible at night from the side but not sure on the legalities on fitting them ?

I was hoping to fit at the front an amber side marker lamp on each side and at the rear a red side marker lamp on each side.

I have had look through Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 specifically SCHEDULE 9 PART I, but not sure if this applies to motorcycles or just motor cars ?.

Applies to road vehicles, so that's motorcycles (although bicycles have some leeway with flashing lights).

Yellow to the side is ok (as seen on many lorries and cars such as the old Volvo S/V40). Mustn't be visible from the front or rear. I'd go for LEDs.

Red light to the rear, white light to the front.
If fitting a fog light there's some rules how high man be (min/max) and if double how far apart they can be.

That's specifically side marker lights for large vehicles.

The general rule is:

No red showing to the front.
Only red showing to the rear (except indicators and reversing lights).

I'd stick to amber and not be too fussed about from which angle they're visible.

Agree with Roger. I've ridden two different American import Goldwings with amber riding lights over a number of years. Never been so much as glanced at by plod.
