Hi all,

On the 68 Triumph Trophy I sorted out for my dad there is an Amal monobloc. I'm not sure I set up the choke properly, mechanically it seems to work fine however it doesn't on anything and thinking about it logically it wouldn't

The Choke (or air valve) sits behind the throttle slide, when you turn it on it drops the slide. However at idle this will do nothing as the throttle isn't open enough for this to have any affect. My question is should be be doing something else too?

Anyone with experience's input would be great. Thumbs Up

It covers the cutaway and stays in the venturi when you crack the throttle.

Literally "choking" it.

EDIT: Tickling it richens the initial fuel charge for starting anyway. Early carburettors didn't have a choke, you tickled then then had to sit and hold the throttle until it was warm enough to idle. It's more for increasing the idle speed when cold by slightly richening the mixture than starting as such.

Also Handy link

EDIT 2: Leave it the choke down when you park the bike. If they spend a while unused, the cable can gum up a bit and the spring isn't powerful enough to drop it. I have a "parking drill" for the enfield which consists of switching the fuel off, setting the engine up to compression and dropping the choke.
