Why do N.I residents have to pay 62.50 for a driving licence when other parts of the UK pay 34.00, the licences are all issued by DVLA in Swansea and I am sure the postage does not make up the 28.50 difference in the cost.

I think N.I has a totally different agency that deals with most aspects of licenses (the DVA, rather than DVLA).

I assume the dvla is cheaper since they have economies of scale (online systems etc) or are better funded, whereas the DVA is small and self supporting.

It looks like NI applies to DVA who pass it onto DVLA. You've got to pay for two agencies to handle it.

Edit: I have no idea why that came up with redundant, it was supposed to be "I agree"?!

DVA ceased to exist last year, all N.I motor licensing is carried out from DVLA Swansea.

NI Direct.gov.uk thinks otherwise. They say apply to the DVA.

The DVA no longer exists, all the employees were made redundant last year with all licencsing matters being taken over by DVLA Swansea, there are no DVLA lincensing offices in N,I , all matters relating to licensing , registration and VED must go through Swansea.

LOL, I know the links are still there but the offices closed last year, the only thing that remains of the old DVA is the test centres which work with the DVLA. There are No, Zero, None, Nil licensing offices in N.I anymore.

The DVLA doesn't exist either, it's now the DVSA

Despite what they might say, having called the DVA in Coleraine the other week their offices are still open and still deal with your driving licence.

All V5/TAX/SORN is dealt with by Swansea.

I had to send my licence off recently to get the address changed, thank the lord the DVA still does it because they have a fair chance of not cocking up your categories like Swansea does.
