If you don't have the "Whatsapp Web" option in the menu on your phone reboot your phone.

What more do you want from a messaging app?

Desktop client. Chats that aren't kept on Whatsapp servers and so are; relatively; private. Illusion of security would be nice too.

For those wanting to get it working in Chromium, change the useragent to
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/41.0.2227.0 Safari/537.36

Because everyone uses the Facebook Messenger desktop application.
Whatsapp uses end-to-end encryption.
You can't have a shit without it being recorded on a server somewhere.

Telegram is free, Whatsapp is owned by the evil Facebook. Wink

If it uses end-to-end encryption, that means it's sending the keys over the internet for me to be able to read it on my browser. I'm no security expert, but that doesn't sound good security practice to me.

Totally agreed about everything being recorded on a server somewhere. Sad

The feature that your phone doesn't need to be switched on and have an internet connection for you to use it on your PC, in a specific browser.

Never heard of public-private keys? Basically, I send you a public key you can use it to encrypt but not decrypt. I have the corresponding private key which is (practically) the only way to decrypt your message. Share the key, but no security issue Smile

The second benefit is that I can identify myself as definitely me - if I encrypt something with my private key then anyone can decrypt it with the public key... It's not about security, but knowing the source.

These algorithms are susceptible to "man in the middle" attacks - by which a server in the middle grabs the public key, creates its own private key and sends out the corresponding new public key. It can then read and relay all messages without either party knowing.

If you can guarantee that initial key exchange then you can be secure - and that's where certificates and the like come in.

Because you send a public key which can only encrypt the message. The private key is stored on your client and not sent and can decrypt a message that has been encrypted using the public key. What happens is both parties send their public key which the other person uses to encrypt their message. When you recieve a message back it is encrypted using the public key you sent, which your private key uses to decrpyt the message.

Theorectically you can use the public key to work backwards and figure out the private key with enough time and computing power. The bad news for crackers is that even with a supercomputer a 128bit AES (which is considered basic) would take 1 billion billion years to crack. The age of the universe is ~13.7 billion years old.

tl;dr public key encrpyts the message. private key decrpyts the message. you can send your public key over the internet because only your private key can decrypt a message encoded using your public key.

EDIT: re-read your mesage. I'd imagine this is why you have to have the phone on and connected to the internet for the chrome browser extension to work. The key is still kept on your phone.

Wait so you still need to have a phone that supports it and have the app?

Dunno specifically in this case, but your browser could generate a temporary public-private key pair, send the public key to your phone which could use it to send the private key securely to your browser...

If the phone is always on then you could use it in the other direction - ie. the phone generates the temporary pair and messages can be sent securely to it and then relayed.

Mostly correct, except AES is a symmetric block cypher algorithm. You need an asymmetric algorithm instead... Negotiate a connection by sending your AES key and eavesdropping becomes trivial.
