Comfortis flea treatment

I usually treat my dogs with frontline but It doesn't seem that effective and they still end up with fleas.

Comfortis seem about a similar price and is still once a month treatment.

Just wondered if anybody had used it or has any experience of it?

we used it and attributed it to a massive skin condition he developed shortly after starting. stopped the pills, some antibiotics to clear his skin and was right as rain. we have since used frontline spot on but only last week we noticed a few fleas on the cat (who also has frontline) so we're looking for other good reliable flea control

Frontline doesn't seem to work any more. From what I've been told, fleas have 'evolved' to that particular flea treatment because it was the most widely used? Not sure how true that is.

Not for a dog, but we use Advocat for Ella (Cat). Used to use Frontline, but it was shit.
Advocat worked wonders.

And then RIP Flea spray for the house. Again, works spot on.

Frontline seemed to lose its effectiveness when the patent ran out and then vets started pushing Frontline Duo instead.

I use Stronghold now. Seems effective.

Cycle Frontline/Advantage/Stronghold. A blind friend with a guide dog says that's the recommended treatment, we did the same with our hound and haven't seen a flea for ages

There have been no comfirmed instances of fipronil resistance.

It's just got cold. Everyone has turned their heating up, flea eggs have hatched out.

When applied monthly, frontline should kill 98% of fleas on the animal within 24h at 28 days post application. Fipronil has just been re-licenced in a new prescription medicine in the last year so they have to be able to back up their claims with research.

Easy to test. If you find a flea, stick it in a jam-jar and check it again after 24h. It ought to be dead. If it is, your frontline is working. The fleas you are seeing have jumped onto your pet in the last 24h.

Merial have a pretty good flea technical helpline so if it was genuine frontline you were using, give their helpline a call or access their website for detailed advice.

I've had a lot of people come in this year saying the frontline hasn't been working and I'm fully prepared to report it as an adverse reaction if it proves to be the case. Nobody has yet brought me a flea which lived for more than 24h after having the frontline applied correctly. A couple of people have brought me totally unrelated human parasites in a jar. The lady who brought me a crab louse stuck to a bit of sticky tape took all my concentration and tact to suggest she show it to her GP with a straight face.

Advantage spot-on for dogs.

When I ordered for that cat, I had to send them the cats weight etc before they would ship it. Worked a treat.

Used the Johnsons tablets for dog and cat, seemed to clear them up when needed.

I tried the jam jar test a around the 16th and the fleas lived for about 4 days. Admittedly it was nearly a month since the last frontline treatment but it was within the time it should have been effective.

Any how I went to the vets to get some thing other then frontline, and the vets told me they had stopped selling frontline because it was rubbish. Apparently they have been getting loads of complaints about it not working.

They recommended stronghold which looks like it covers more then just fleas and ticks, so I'll see how that goes.

Been using Effipro XL (fipronil) for Bruno for ages now, it seems to be perfectly effective. Just a tad cheaper than Frontline.

I ran out a few months back and went over a month without putting any on, he didn't seem to have any particularly bad problem with extra fleas, and once I got round to getting some more, I just put it on as before, so far so good.

Our vet recommends Advocat for our cat. Always seems to work.

Now, how to stop the bugger getting worms all the time...

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it?s worth.

Comfortis is POM-V according to the NOAH site, so you won't be able to get it without a prescription from your vet.

I know there's been lots of rumours going around about Frontline's efficacy including whispers of their losing their position as a POM-SQP medication. I suspect a lot of this 'lack of efficacy' is more due to the fact that people do not treat their houses and are suddenly surprised when they still find fleas on their pets after the fleas have relocated from the untreated carpets and curtains.

Don't just treat your pets, if you're having a problem with an infestation your house needs treating too.
