With the eco-system completely failing in my freshwater tank last month, and everything but the loach dying, I've had to strip and sterilize my tank.

Started rebuilding it a couple of weeks ago with new substrate, filter medium, air pump and few fish plus 1 shrimp.

Heading to the local fish shop and grab some bog wood or drift wood tomorrow.
Still need some plants and a better place for the bubble stone though.

Lets see yours.

Do you know why the eco-system failed?

What's your cleaning 'regime' like? I've only scanned the first post so I could have missed something but do you have two sets of filter media such as two sponges and two sets of charcoal? If you do, do you clean them both at the same time? I've always been told to leave one dirty and one clean.

Bio-orb because fuck doing it the hard way. I change the filter when it's filter changing time.

Techincally it's Mrs stinkwheels and it had 2 very nice looking male guppies in for now. It's recently been resurrected following a thermostat fail/fish soup episode.

I have a 4 stage external filter and I only used activated carbon to remove any medication from the water.

There's no way to figure out what went wrong :/

That's an odd one. It's the only thing I could think of that would send the eco system out of kilter.

Got a 6x3x2ft tank with an osphronemus goramy living in it. He rekt all the other fish about 10 years ago despite the aquarium advising us that he'd coexist with the other species of fish.

If you use charcoal you need to change it often as once it becomes totally saturated it will release all its toxins in one foul swoop, I use ordinary household coal that gets rinsed and placed in the tank which doubles as nice decoration, this is removed every 2 months and burnt. If you intend to use a buffer such as bogwood make sure the fish can tolerate the acidic conditions created by the bogwood.

I has a Jewel tank, with an external 4 stage filter, fluval digital heater.

Fishwise there are neons, guppies, 2 salt and pepper corys, a spotted syno catfish and a couple of rummy nose tetras.

Also 3 bamboo shrimp, 6 tiger shrimp, 2 armoured shrimp, yamoto shrimp and some others I cant remember the name of.

I'm having quite a problem with hair algae at the moment, as fast as I'm pulling it out it's growing back!

Not got one, but been thinking about a bio-orb for ages.
Now knowing that Stinkers has one has got me all interestimicated in them again.

Can you put, like Neon Tetras in them things, cos I really like those.

Osaka 155 tank, been up and running nearly six years now so it's had a few inhabitants.

Current fish:
3 congo tetras
10 or 12 cardinal tetras
Some glowlight danios
2 otocinclus
1 black neon tetra (the last of the original inhabitants)
5 chilli rasbora (my favourites - I'd have more if I could find any anywhere!)
Loads of red cherry shrimp
Snails.

You can see the chilis at the top in this one

Couple of shrimp:

Not easy to get a close up of the chili rasbora; they are tiny and hang out at the back a lot, but they will come forward with patience or food. Incredibly intense colour, and the only fish who've worked out that me opening the cupboard door means food time Smile

I haven't done this for a long time, and was only beginning to learn the ropes, but shouldn't you establish all plants and features and allow everything to "settle in" before putting fish in?

If you fancy some, I wouldn't worry too much about them loading the tank, they are tiny. You'd probably count 3 of them against one guppy or cardinal tetra.

They do hang around the very top of the tank, so I'd check first that they'll get on OK with your guppies.
