History:

I was given the bike as a project from my gf's dad it had been stood for about 4 years but considering it was free why not
I had it starting quite easily new battery, solenoid, sparks, air filter and fuel.
I also gave it a service new oil and oil filter
It was running ok but always had a stickiness which the gf's dad also had when he used to ride it, to solve this problem he would put it into gear, and rock the bike back and forth which then it would start, it's happened to me a few times and has always worked
It also had a leak on the carb which I have now solved by removing the tank cleaning the rust out of the tank and float chambers new petcock and all is leak free
This is where I'm now stuck

When I refitted everything I went to start the bike and it was turning but not starting as was trying to fill the chambers but was turning over
I then left it and charged the battery since then it will just about turn over once and then nothing sounds like a dead battery but I have had a good known battery and still the same fault
I've also checked I've not got a spark

I have checked the solenoid and it's working

The spark plugs are new

The battery is new and fully charged

The engine has not sized as have rode it down a hill in gear to turn it over

The ignition pickup is working

I have now got a massive headache as I can't understand why one minute it turns over and next after putting it on charge it won't

Any suggestions or tests that I can carry out will be appreciated and not the usual throw a match in

Thanks in advance

1. Try charging the battery fully, then after leaving it to stand for an hour, measure the voltage across the terminals.

2. Connect the battery back up, and try to start the bike.

3. Measure the voltage across the battery terminals again, and let us now what readings you got for 1 & 3.

Brand-new batteries can be faulty too!

Pits thanks for pointing it out but the arrogance in the post is not called for next time please look at the time it was posted

Sorry, I feel the need to answer this, but what does the time of posting have to do with the price of chicken, let alone anything else?

The answer to the question though is held in the fact that it is a CB400 and complete shit.

I see you have replaced everything, but have you done any simple checks like a dodgy earth? I just say this because a bad earth would stop shit from working, it would be one of the first things I would check Thumbs Up

Mr. Projects, (roughly) where are you? I'm in North Shropshire and will happily have a ride through and offer a new set of eyes. I'm not saying I know a deal but may have a different idea or two from being fresh to it. Your profile seems to show You're reasonably local-ish, just off the M60 maybe?

Sounds like your starter motor is cattle trucked.

If everyone has wound their necks in now?

Sounds like the current, main problem is with the (very simple) starter circuit.

So testing.

Short between the solenoid terminals with an old screwdriver. If the stater motor spins over, the problem is with the starter electrics.

If it doesn't, the problem is a flat battery, a duff starter motor or bad, high-current connections between the starter and the battery. Electronics/engine or even switch positions have nothing to do with it. If a working starter motor is correctly attached to a charged battery, shorting the solenoid will make it spin. End-of.

So. Will it bump? How do you know you have no spark if it wont turn over on the starter?

so it whizzes over all ok with no sign of stuck vales ( or clutch ) a stuck vale would be a disaster if not sorted..........valces set at an angle and will hit piston and bend if not freely closing so no revs, onl;y idle ( NO REVS )

disconnect the black/white cdi wire and check for sparks again..

so engine whizzes over ok or not??

if not then that's the ign problem...the system needs a good rate of change for the ign system.........ie a quickly rotating flywheel........... but the ign system works on a kick start variety........... :karma:

It could also be a duff engine earth.
