My ZZR's speedometer is not working, the guy I got it from said it probably needs a new wheel sensor assembly. He thinks that because he said he put on a speedo cable and it snapped. I wanted to check on here before I spend 300$ on parts for it. Thanks for your time yall

Hi

My guess would be the bent bit of metal that sits in the wheel to drive the speedo. On the 600 this is very easily damaged if you are not very careful when putting the front wheel back in place. They are only about £7 for the 600 (presume the 400 part is the same).

All the best

Keith

I've never noticed a piece like that before, here in a couple hours I'll take a picture of it, could you try to tell me exactly where it is in reference to the pictures. I'm a novice mechanic/ rider so I don't know exactly what everything is yet

Hi

If you support the front of the bike and take the front wheel out, there is a circular bit of metal that goes in to the wheel (near the bearing) and catches on a couple of cutouts on the wheel, and the other 'end' of it sits in a couple of cutouts in the speedo drive.

It is very easy to put the front wheel in place without getting the cutouts aligned. This works for a couple of miles and then no speedo reading

All the best

Keith

Would it have snapped the speedo cable though? I'll look at it in a few hours when the sun comes up. What should I support the front with?

Hi

Probably not. I assumed the speedo cable had snapped on ours (which is a bit of a pain to change - getting behind the clocks), but it was this drive piece.

To support the bike you can remove the bellypan (easy enough) then carefully use a jack under the front of the engine / frame (depending on the jack, and how secure it is). Note the front mudguard is fairly enveloping of the wheel so the front end needs to be reasonably high to get the wheel out.

All the best

Keith

Alright I'll get it off here in a bit, when I align it, are there grooves or how do I know what to align it to?
I have the manual open, I can see how to get it off/back on but I don't see anything on how to align it.

Hi

It should be obvious when you have it in front of you, but difficult to explain. You can see the cutouts when it is in front of you, but the problem is that the speedo drive gearbox will almost go in place (enough to assemble the bike) with it not lined up. I would suggest disconnecting the cable from the drive gearbox while you put everything else together as it gives you a little more free movement

All the best

I couldn't find anything to jack my bike up with, so I got a speedometer app and am using that for a week or two until I can take it to a shop.
