Rusty bits oooerrr

Hi, Just looking for some advice on what order people would do things in based on the following situation.

Through a combination of working away and the snow my bike (Sprint ST1050 has spent 3 weeks under cover in the back garden.

I took the cover off yesterday and i have rusted disc brakes, the chain has spots of surface rust and so do the rear sprocket teeth.
I know it is just surface rust and its to be expected. The chain was lubed 200 miles ago so it has some lube on it and isnt seized in the slightest. It could do with a new coating of lube though as it went on cold and is tacky to the touch.

My plan is is to clean the chain and re-lube with it cold, Ride it and then hopefully find the rust is gone and i can re lube again.

Or i could ride it to break the worst of the surface rust, then deep clean and lube.

In regards to the discs, im pondering using some break cleaner on them before i ride it. Is that a good idea?

So what would you do?

I came to my ZZR after leaving it a few months and had similar spots of surface rust on my chain. I went straight to the engine oil and a toothbrush, used lots and scrubbed with a toothbrush then got my oily microfiber and rubbed all the excess off while scrubbing the chain at the same time.

Looked magic afterwards.

Just ride it. surface rust won't affect the brakes, just lube the chain when it next needs it

Take it for a ride keeping the brakes jammed on to get rid of the surface rust on the discs.

If there's any seized links spray the chain with degreaser and twat it whilst it is on the rear sprocket with a piece of 2X4 or rubber mallet wipe off the degreaser with shit roll and finally oil the chain.

I'm told Brasso and wirewool work really well on exhaust headers and other perishable areas. But yeah, normally you clear disc brakes through braking.

My rear brake gets surface rust over night some evenings and the bike is used daily.

bit of cleaner and ride, being careful as you may not get as much from it for a few miles.

I could do to rinse the bike more often tbh


I use snoosnoo's method for the chain, scrub it with engine oil and a toothbrush and wipe off.

If it's only surface rust, I'd just give the chain a clean with some paraffin and a hard brush, then re-lube.

As for the discs. They should come up fine after riding for a mile or two, if you make sure to use both brakes. Mine can get a bit of surface rust on after a day or two, it's quite normal at this time of year.
