So lately I moved further out of London to Romford, with a new commuting distance of over 12 miles each way (it used to be 6.5 miles from East Ham). However I noticed my fuel usage wasn't twice as much. I used to refuel after 9-10 round trips. Travelling from my new place I was able to make 6 round trips before having to refuel (this is despite having taken a few detours that lengthened my trip (to do some errands), and being stuck once in severe gridlock when part of the ring road was closed. I'm guessing the reason is that with the longer trip I have now, the engine spends much more time running at optimum temperature?

Sure, relatively less time on the choke. How's the route? More (relatively) constant speed rather than stop-start?

Both from my new place or old place there's plenty of gridlock and it's start-stop for many parts of the way unfortunately. It's rush hour London...

I feel sorry for you. I'm trying to leave Rom town.

There are a number of reasons why fuel consumption changes. Longer trips (as in duration) are more economical than shorter trips as you get better MPG from a warmed up engine.

The nature of the roads also plays a big part. Steady progress is better than stop start. East Ham is much more grid locked than Romford.

got an android phone? download the fuelly app and mycartracks and record data on your journeys.

Do you have this silly habit of 'warming up the engine' by leaving it idling for a while before you set off?

If you do:

a. Stop it, it's silly.
2. That would make a huge difference to your fuel usage.
14. It's silly.

I am in Chadwell Heath. I travel into London via Ilford and that area is severely congested both in the morning and evening. I don't think it's any better than East Ham. My destination is my office in between Old Street/Barbican station.

Where do you park, London Wall? Mine's the Fazer in bay 49.

I say between Barbican/Old Street but rather it's on Golden Lane. There's a number of bike bays there and that's where I'm parked.
