Hi guys, I'm going to a dealer tomorrow to possibly chop the bike in, and when getting all the paperwork together I couldn't find the spare key with datatool fob on!!! Will they still take the bike with only one key and would I get hammered by the cost?

Cheers

Would you buy a bike with only 1 key. ( I wouldn't)

Find out how much a replacement key would cost.

Otherwise keep looking.

It is a dealer, let them sort it out or promise to drop it off when you find it at the back of the sofa.

Don't mention it. Shake on the deal. Don't put down a deposit. When you come to actually doing the monies later, still don't mention it. If it comes up, express your regret that you can't give them money, and head towards the door.

Why would you not by a bike with only one key?

I can think of a few possible 'reasons', please tell me if any apply.

"There must be another key out there for my bike" - yes, but even the bike comes with 2 keys (or, like mine, about 7 keys) there's no guarantee they are the only keys.

"New keys are expensive and I need a spare" - a plain key is about 4 quid, a transponder key is 30-90, but if you're buying and expecting all the keys chances are it's newish so you're spending a fair bit, a few more quid is just a bargaining point.

"I want everything the bike had when it was new" - bet it's had an oil change...........

I've bought bikes with anywhere from none to (about) 7 keys, never gave it a second thought. In fact, a couple of bikes I've bought came with additional keys that weren't for the bike at all - I never found out what they were for.

2 keys are normally needed to be shown should your bike be stolen, normally the only proof it wasnt stolen with key.

Would rather have both keys just to be safe.

Don't talk rot.

Rare as it may be, plus would rather have a spare should I lose one.
