Hi, I acquired a bike (for free) roughly 18 months ago complete with old green logbook as a restoration project. It is now ready to go back on the road, so I went on the gov.UK/vehicle enquiries website to see what details they had and it comes up that no details are held for this vehicle !! They want me to phone them. My question is, as the bike has been off the road since 2000 and hasn't been sorned, will I get an £80 fine for not sorning it when I got it? Or should I tell them I have just bought it ? Leaving the previous owner with the chance of taking the rap?which I don't really want to happen.

If a vehicle was off the road before the SORN regulations came into force, then it doesn't need doing now. At least, not until there is a change (if you tax it, then take it off the road, it needs a SORN).

I got a bike a little while back, and got it put in my name. I was told over the phone that SORNing was not required (which obv got recorded).

If no details are held AT ALL you may have fun getting it registered....

Edit to add -- when you say 'green logbook' do you mean the really old one filled out with biro?

Just snd of a request for wa new log book and have you as new keeper with old one 'lost'.

It's what I did for a 1983 c50 that was in a garage for the last 15 years. I've had no letters or requests for SORN in the last 9 months or so since doing it and it's still in pieces in the loft awaiting to be finished.

FTFY.

What the DVLA do to the previous keeper is up to them. Falling on your sword isn't going to stop them being stabbed.

DVA no longer exist which is why there is no record for the bike, you need to send the green book to the DVLA in Swansea who will send you a replacement, send them a letter along with the old green book explaining you have just bought the bike, they will send a replacement with your details free of charge. Take a photocopy of the old book before sending as the DVLA have a habit of loosing old reg numbers especially valuable DVA registrations.

The V5 will not cost you anything if changing from green book to current V5, Sorn started 31/01/1998. Does your bike have a DVANI registration?

The DVLA in Swansea will have no details of the bike at all, just send in the old green book and they will change it free of charge, the DVLA has no details of any DVANI registered vehicle registered before 2006 unless the owner has given them the details since last year when DVA was transferred to DVLA Swansea.
