Took the bike for its mot today but on the way within quarter of a mile the bike cut out. Wouldn't start or bump start. The oil and neutral light were dim but when the kill switch was switched on to kill the power the light up as normal. The switch then had smoke coming through it. Pushed it to the shop who has had a brief look. He said its shorted out but unsure if it's the switch or the wiring loom further down. Obviously if it's the switch that's fine but if it's in the wiring loom I need a new loom which is very expensive. If it is further down the loom would it still have smoke through the switch or do you think it's more than likely the switch end and will work fine if the switch is replaced?

Well, you're not going to replace the loom without checking the switch, so you might as well start there.

It's not required, just bin it.
