hi all

Been looking at some quotes because my renew is coming up and i have a question about third party fire and theft cover.

if i was in an accident that was the other drivers fault, lets say they run into the back of me at traffic lights, will their insurance pay for the damage to me and and my bike?

also are there any other things i should consider between third party fire + theft and fully comp? i know somethings arnt always clearly stated outside of the small print like uninsured driver cover.

Bennets seem to be about the cheapest for me personally

Thanks

I suppose the main thing to take into account is how much are you willing to pay in the long run?

All insurance is taken out "in case we have an accident that is our fault." or "in case we need to make a claim." With the case of a non fault accident you notify your insurance but you do not make a claim as the other party has to pay.

The difference between fully comp and TPFT, to me, is as follows. If I drop my bike am I going to claim on my insurance? Would the doing so cause my no claims to vanish? My premiums to increase? Or would it be cheaper to not claim and repair any broken parts without insurance being involved?

For me the answer is TPFT. I am insured if I am involved in an accident that is my fault. I am insured if my bike is stolen or burnt. Any damage I do outside of those terms would be cheaper to fix vs the cost of insurance claim/long term premiums.

New faired bike then fully comp may be a good option but for anything else, I wouldnt bother.

The insurance level you take out depends on what you are covered for.

Leave it to the insurance companies to decide who's at fault, even if someone did rear end you they could just deny it and then you're in limbo.. any video footage or witnesses are always helpful in the event of a claim.

Providing that the person you're in an accident with has the basic TPO insurance and admits liability or is found guilt then you'd get a payout (claims are never this simple).

"TPO; physical damage to another vehicle or structure"

my first concern is some little (insert expletive of choice) stealing it, i keep it in a garage, rear wheel has a 14mm chain going on to another bike another 14mm chain on the front with an alarmed disk lock, i would say its as secure as its going to be.

as for claims, i figure anything under £1k - 1.5k probably isnt worth the claim, on my current policy i have a £600 excess, on a £1.500 damage clain that gives me £900 from the insurance, my thinking is they will get that back over the next few years with increased premiums.

But i wasnt sure if i was missing anything with third party fire and theft

Fully comp covers you for any damage in any accident no matter who's at fault, if it's your fault you may have to pay the first £200 or so (excess) towards damages to your own.

Third party fire and theft covers you if your bike is stolen / damaged or destroyed by fire. It also covers for any damage you / your bike does to anyone else it does NOT cover damage you do to your own person or property.

Third party only, as above but no theft or fire cover.

If someone rear ends you and everything goes to plan (fault is admitted by their insurance) you'll be put back as you were prior to the incident or as close as possible. Your level of cover does not matter.
