Hiyas
I'm looking for a cheap first big bike around the 600-700 mark, Ive seen a fs650st and am waiting on a price, it has 22k on it looks well with no rust I can see but apparently it jumps out of second or third gear. Will this be a straight forward job or expensive to do myself?, I know its not a race bike but it looks quite tough and comfy to commute on as I really want my full license this spring or summer.
Opinions please.

Mark

There is a small chance you will get lucky and it is something simple but most likely you are talking new engine time.

Striping it down the best case scenario is that you can split the cases without removing the head. Even then it will cost probably the value of the bike in labour/parts.

It isn't something I would without previous engine experience. I'd avoid or budget for a new engine.

Jumping out of gear = don't touch with someone else's bargepole unless they are practically giving it away. It could range from simple (unlikely or they would have fixed it) to complete engine tear down.

£6-700 gets you any of the 500 twins, an NTV, a ZZR600, a Thundershat or possibly a slightly tatty CBR. All better choices than a fucked beemer

Could be chain tension, a misadjusted or gunged up shifter or limp-ankle by the seller.

However, I'd assume that it's as serious and time consuming as this page makes out and offer scrap value for it.

Or better yet, just look elsewhere.

Thanks, will not bother, just perusing ebay atm, looking for a commuter, reliable, easy to work on, I love my CG but a strong wind or big hill and it suffers. I like the sit up riding style.
