Looking at you Fisty..

What should I look out for when buying one of these apart from the usuals? Any years better than others? Worthwhile mods?

Many thankyoos.

Binge had one, as did Killa... Best shoot them a PM too. When I rode with both of them, I can recollect there being oodles of drive against my FireBlade.

Things like replacing the rotary damper for a standard shock and spring...maxton do a kit.

Sensitive to chain tension too.

Didn't find it that oomphy, but I had one straight after downgeared x11 which was considerably faster.

Makes a great sound, especially with stubbies the size of a fag packet.

Didn't like the handling much myself, but I did have it when I was all weak and broken, and it seemed to eat through tyres and chain. Needed a big battery to start, and terrible fuel consumption, although that might have just been me.

I've seen the following video several times, and each time Shane Byrne's almost off the edge of the road riding on the TLR really scares me, much more than the pegs decking out on Frosty's VTR! Shocked

Get one. Get one now before the become collectable blahblah. Prices are starting to rice for no good reason.

Things to look out for are mainly dodgy second gears and rotten bottom radiatiors, headstock bearings get mashed by heavy handed wheelies. Fuel pump gaskets leak and cost £40 to replace. Otherwise it's just the usual wear and tear the same as othe bikes.

If you can get one with the rear damper already replaced with something decent. A 55 profile rear tyre helps the handling, as does droppng the forks 10mm in the yokes. Stick a pair of cans on and you will get a hard on every time you thumb the starter!

The amount of mods you can do are pretty limitless but it will never be the lightests most powerful bike on the planet.
I love mine, it's the only bike that has ever fitted me!

I had 1 for 1 month!

Its a great bloated sturdy fast bike and has an evil growl

I only got rid because i could not get on with the hydraulic clutch as it was very on and off unlike cable clutches which are gradual
Otherwise i would probably still have it

It has plenty of storage space under the pillion seat

Fuel tank seemed small though as i was filling up every 80 miles

They sound and look great is all I know about them. Hope to have a blast on one someday! It's one of my favourite bikes though I don't think I'd own one.

Never ridden the R, only the S, agree with Fisty regarding the noise. Dat manly thud.

I was a little underwhelmed by mine however I think its more the fact the revs climb slowly so it feel slower than it is. The speed however rises far quicker Laughing

Fuel pump gasket and have fun with spark plug changes Thumbs Up

Both the S and R are very good like the VTR too at popping and banging hugely on the overrun and setting off car alarms on sunday mornings in quiet residential areas! Laughing

I would say definitely a cult bike now though, and as Fisty said the RLR didn't sell that well or for that long. It also had a 135bhp motor that until it was dyno'd Ducati engineers were adamant it was bullshit!

I'd put the TLR up there with bikes like the GSXR1100, RF900, SP1, ZX7R, 92 Blade, 98 R1, all cult machines now!

They have a lot of flaws, but the power to £ ratio is very good. Wouldn't call it cult, they are ugly as sin. Comfy though.

Think a ZX9R would be a better bang for buck, without looking quite so hideous!

RF900's are not great lookers but only in the way that a Ferrari testarossa isn't either.

They are cheap for an accomplished sports tourer, much like the Thunderace, but they do offer a lot of performance for little cash and importantly low insurance. The B-series ZX9R is similar but not as cheap to insure I would say.

Anyway I'm no massive RF900 fan, it's just I've talked to at least ex owners who reckoned it was such a lot of bike for next to nothing and one guy I know has had two of them. He went back to an RF900 after an SP1, not just to save cash but for more comfortable weekend road riding. You never really meet an anyone who had an RF that says 'what a load of shit that bike was' or 'never have I had a bike with so many problems'.

Therefore I term it as a cult bike, as for the few people that like and own them, they really really like them!

I had one for two years but it was interesting that it had 5 previous owners by three year old when I got it.
For a variety of reasons it seems owners often don't keep them long.

Nice characterful bike, I never had a problem with the handling really, but it was easy to go stupid fast.
You would often look at the speedo and find the very big numbers hard to believe as it feels like half that.

What's your personal opinion on it? I've been taking a closer look at them lately.

Great bikes, absolutely loved mine with a passion but that was in 2007 so a fair bit older now.

A fair few have had the crappy rotary rear shocks replaced with Ohlins, which mine had and supposed to sort the majority of handling issues.

Never had any reliability trouble with mine at all, made a good race bike too.

Seems little point buying a TLR unless you really want one when early RSVR's can be had for such little money.

I bough Wave's off him - T37 FRA - absolutely loved it and would still have it if I hadn't of had to get rid of it due to Uni.

Noise is amazing, v.comfortable (for me), handled well enough and went like a rocket (compared to my other bikes).

Would definitely recommend!
