PostPosted: 22:19 - 01 Feb 2015    Post subject: Tracking your bike (security) question Reply with quote

Hello guys,

Well today I took a lovely forced ride on my bike. I was keeping it over the winter at my girlfriends garage but it seems that someone has taking a liking to it and wants my bike. They broke off the lock last week and police spotted them again by the garage this weekend.

So I had to get my bike back home and park in the drive. I was wondering if there are any cheap(fairly priced) solutions to track/find your bike if it's stolen?

Thanks.

If it's the joyriding type that want it, a tracker will do next to nothing as they'll just ride it for an hour or two until it's broken beyond repair and then torch it or leave it in a field. Tracker is only useful if the bike is staying at their houses and can give a pinpoint location. The police or yourself going to the field / park they're on with it, won't do much they'll just ride off. Most thieves won't take a stolen motorbike to their own houses.

Of course this is my opinion on them.

The best bet is alarms and nice Almax chain and padlock's. It's just a likely, if not even more so likely to get taken off of your driveway where everyone can see a bike is there (covered or not.)

I'm assuming you had it in a garage at your SO's? How did they know it was there, does she access the garage a lot in plain view of people?

Get these locks on the garage

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/221170774068?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

They''ll still get in if they really want to but it makes it harder.

Thanks for the reply Boxing, and you do make sense if they want a joyride they won't keep it for long.

Well she has a Chinese 125 in the garage as well, so as she's taking her bike in and out mine can be seen at the back.

I am not too worried about the bike being taken from my drive as it's a very quite area, I've left my car with doors unlocked many a times.

But she lives near town centre lots of characters walking about.

Imho it is better to stop the scrote taking the bikes rather than trying to track them once they have been stolen. Thumbs Up

monkeybiker, Joncrete Cungle thanks for your replies.

The garage locks seems like a great idea and I do like the ground anchor. It would be better to stop them from taking all together than go chasing for the bike.

I've toyed with the idea of this in the past, not sure how well it would work in practice:

Buy a cheap old smartphone, some bits to wire up a charging system underseat, and some foam or a big car wash style sponge.

Wire up the charger to a switched live, make sure to turn everything unnecessary off on the phone to extend the battery life when not on charge (standby should get you a couple of days at least which is enough for most commuter bikes).

Mount phone in sponge to stop it being shaken to buggery, stick it under the seat.

Use phone finder type app to track bike.

I have 2 big big padlocks (yale maximum 63mm) on the outside of my garage, as well as the normal garage lock. Inside, I've got a ground anchor and Almax 3.

The whole lot cost maybe £300
Good security is much cheaper than the alternative.

I use These as a general purpose tracker and as an add-on to security systems for special applications.

There are similar devices for about the same price, but this one can operate a relay from a text message - which I find particularly useful.

The only problem, is that the company that makes them, also makes a 4-band GSM blocker - which would render it useless if the thief had one.

TBH, I wouldn't bother fitting one to my bike, because if it gets stolen and thrashed, I don't really want it back.

hi,
i like the look of these, especially the fact you can move it from bike to bike, without any complications.
i will definitely consider one, when i find out how often i need to top the thing up.

cheers,

If you get a free sim card from GiffGaff, £10 credit lasts at least 6 months. It's 2G compatible - all trackers run on 2G.

just look up gps tracker on amazon or ebay. you can get ones that you can set a security fence area so if the tracker goes outside a defined area you will get an alert txt to your phone with grid coordinates. £50 should do it.

thieves hate these kind of locks theyre a bastard to get a crow bar into or smack off with a hammer. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Van-Garage-Shed-Door-Security-Padlock-Hasp-Set-Lock-Heavy-Duty-73mm-Steel-New/140790523089?_trksid=p2054897.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3D67e9d57710064305bee9162c46df5eef%26pid%3D100204%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D30%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D221170774068

Remember, noise and time are the scums enemy. so think in terms of layers of security. locked space, alarmed space, chain secured bike, alarmed bike, trackered bike.

Something ive thought of is a sacrificial object, like a chainsaw or petrol strimmer made to look good but just a knackered bit of scrap from a carboot sale. Fitted with a tracker and an easier steal for the scumbags.

Exactly what I was going to suggest, cheap monthly contract for unlimited data and use the GPS and App. simple and effective, just keep an eye on your battery level if you don't have a kick start

Good luck

I believe they have a back-up battery that lasts 5 to 7 days in standby mode - but I haven't tested this.

I usually connect them to systems that have a much larger back-up battery, so it isn't a problem.

If you wire the live feed to a circuit that is only live when the ignition is on, it won't drain the bike's battery - also, I think it will send a text message to warn when the power is getting low.
