Hi,

Haven't been riding my bike much here in the south of France over the winter, although I do start her every week.

Went to start it yesterday and it took a little longer to turn over but started and after the initial 3k rpm warm up, it settled to 1200-1500rpm idle. I left it for 20 minutes and turned it off.

Decided I might head out for a ride a little while later and she didn't turn over. The ignition works fine, but it doesn't fire up. Now drained the battery so in hindsight should have left it running a little longer before hand.

Have ordered a trickle charger, but wondered what might be causing the problem. It's been fairly cold here - similar temperatures to the UK and it's outside with a cover on. The bike has always started before.

Is it just a little stubborn due to the cold and needs the battery charged, or could it be something else?

I know these have an automatic choke - could this need be adjusting. Might I have accidentally flooded the engine. Could the reg-rectifer be the culprit?

All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
Antony

It sounds like the cold has killed your dying battery. Starting the bike every week has probably done you no favours as the charge used by the start won't be replenished by idling the bike. You might get away with charging the battery or it could be time for a new one.

Fair enough, thanks. How long do you recon the bike needs to be idling or ridden to top up the battery?

Either way, guess I'll find it if that's the case when the charger comes. Hopefully the battery is still good.

Thanks,
Antony

I'd probably expect around an hour of decent riding to keep it working nicely, however I'd have removed for winter and popped on a trickle charger or something.

My Triumph one was dead yesterday so a quick jump start and riding for 30-45 mins was no where near enough to charge it, it'll be dead by the end of the week.

did it crank over at all?

I'd advise against just cranking it over and letting it idle. Just letting it get warm without any load on the engine doesn't really acomplish anything.

When I leave a bike sat for a good length of time (month and upwards) I remove the battery if it's cold and fill the tank up and coat the chain so that it's dripping with oil. Never had any issues doing this.

It didn't crank over. Interesting regarding bump starting and it still not doing the job. Guess you live and learn. Didn't think it would be a problem leaving the battery for a couple of months. Been too spoilt by SV and CBR reliability to think practically.

Guess I'll get it charged and report here if the issue still isn't solved.

Might be she's sulking if she overheard me talking about a Speed Triple 1050 which is next on the list.

Got the charger in the post today. After charging for an hour the battery was good and the bike started right up. The charger is just a cheapo one without an indicator though so was afraid to leave it on too long and cook the battery.

Now to wait for more blue skies.
