PostPosted: 18:31 - 12 Feb 2015    Post subject: Anyone bought a helmet from wheelup.it Reply with quote

Hi, Im looking at buying a new helmet and after googling it I found it quite a bit cheaper at wheelup.it. Is it ok to buy an import helmet or I'm am I better of buying from a UK store and paying the extra? I understand it won't have the gold acu sticker needed for track days but would it still be ok for the roads?

Thanks
Col

Yes. CE marked = legal.

At bigger meets, someone with the correct scrutineering qualification can put an ACU sticker on any helmet that conforms to the requirements.

It's quite a bit cheaper from wheelup. £290 inc postage and around £400 in the UK

I bought my last helmet from Germany. Not sold in the UK. Copybook transaction with the expected teutonic efficiency.

You'd just have to hope an Italian company doesn't conform to their national stereotypes regarding efficiency and customer service.

(Presuming you haven't tryed wearing the one you want before - ignore if you have)

That would be the main thing that might put me off; it won't work out so cheap if you have to pay to post it back for a refund/end up with a helmet that doesn't fit.

My Tucano invalid blankets have been fine coming from Italy.

I go via eBay and PayPal by preference, but credit card over £100 you should be safe enough.

It's a shoei gt air helmet so I'd expect the quality to be the same as a UK version. I was mainly thinking about whether it has the right numbers stamped on it to make it legal in the uk

Yeah tried it on a few time, just didn't want to pay £399 for it as I'm after other stuff also. Found this UK shop though selling it, still at £399 but throwing in vouchers unto the value of £150 depending on which one you chose so I can get my other bits too.

It will be ECE 22.05P marked, which is fine.

Even if for some reason it were not so marked, it "is of a type manufactured for use by persons on motor cycles which by virtue of its shape, material and construction could reasonably be expected to afford to the wearer a degree of protection from accidental injury similar to or greater than that provided by [an approved helmet]", so you're good to go anyway.

Thumbs Up

Just to throw it out there as another option; if you fancy possibly saving a lot of money Razz One of these might do the job?
-Road legal
-Gold ACU approved
-Internal sunvisor

Only downside appears to be it doesn't come with a pinlock visor as standard - still much cheaper overall if you do want one to buy as an extra though. A mate bought one recently and likes it and i've been using a different model Viper helmet for over a year now and can't fault it.

While I'm normally the first to pipe up saying how there is no evidence that expensive helmets provide more protection than cheap ones tested to the same standards, the expensive ones certainly have a nicer finish and are often more comfortable because of their improved finish.

My only concern with ordering from abroad would be how many times it's dropped/kicked/chucked in and out of vans whilst in transit to good old Blighty. If it's been dropped its potentially useless. Other then that I'd say crack on Thumbs Up

And then report back here on whether it all turned out alright so we can order cheap helmets too.

£400 to £184?! Are these 2014 designs and 2015 ones are in soon? That's a ridiculous price.

Fair point, should probably buy a British made helmet instead, hand delivered straight from the factory in a giant hamster ball filled with kittens.

I'll knock you up one in my shed. Five thousand ponds, lead time is two years, unless I go out of business. No, I don't need your measurements, I'll just do it by eye.

Obviously I meant it would be subject to more dropping opportunities then normal, having travelled further.

Anyway, my last lid was delivered nestled in a still-warm Yorkshire pudding on the back of a golden chariot, pulled by two British bulldogs wearing top hats and union jack waistcoats. One of them was wearing a monocle.
