Quick question.

Do I need to split the crankcases, on a 1982 Honda XL125R, to replace the kickstart return spring. The Haynes is not clear and only covers replacement within the "total engine stripdown" chapter.
Just found something, for an older model, whilst Googling, that suggests if I remove the clutch the K/S shaft can be removed, without splitting the cases.

Whaddya reckon, anyone done this on this engine?

Obviously this is going to be extremely helpful... On a '77 XL250 you only have to take off the clutch cover to get to the whole kickstart assembly and can do it with the engine in the frame.

I had to sort the k/s spring on mine...

Had a look at my spare engine, the cases have to be split to get at the K/S mechanism.  On my engines the whole mechanism is enclosed by part of the crankcase, the earlier engines have the mechanism exposed!

The diagram from the fiche would suggest that the spring is accessible from under the clutch cover

Unfortunately Fizzer, that link is not my bike, mine's the single shock model, cmsnl don't list my bike, My bike, according to cmsnl, seems to be a mixture of XR200 & XL200R parts with a 125 engine that is not the same as the one you linked to.

I dived in today, stripped the engine down, the K/S return spring is only accessible if you split the crankcases.
The engine has been apart before, the spring had snapped, the PO had also forgotten to install both thrust washers on the K/S mechanism!

I'll update my "Show and Tell" thread with photos and more info, soon!

Even https://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_motorcycle_parts_select_model_M10.php do not mention your model.

www.xrv.org.uk is full of others with XLs and XRs Thumbs Up

Lots of good pics here https://www.google.com/search?site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=677&q=XL125R&oq=XL125R&gs_l=img.3..0j0i5j0i24.3465.7417.0.8654.6.6.0.0.0.0.83.358.6.6.0.msedr...0...1ac.1.61.img..0.6.358.7uLrcGBHPUk

Both David Silver and Wemoto list parts for a 1982 XL125RC.
The other sites, I've looked at, seem to miss out my bike, listing models for that year as 125S?, all with twin shocks and four stud back wheels, (mine's got five).
There's loads of stuff, supposedly for this model, on Ebay, but having ordered a couple of oil seals only to find they didn't fit I have to be careful what I order.
Having done some cross checking of Honda part numbers, 80% of the none engine parts are the same as the XL200R, the other 20% seem to be bits from the XR200!
Numbers stamped on the engines I've got start with "125 SE"
