Watch out for gatsos up the A68 when you get further north
Get as far north as you can. From Edinburgh you could go to the west coast, cut accross to Callender, Crieanlarrach then up over Rannoch moor to Glencoe. After that head up the coast as far as you think you can, the roads are all fantastic \
Another possibility is to head for Perth then get on the A93 for Braemar. It is a bit busy for the first bit but then you go up over the Spittal of Glenshee road to Braemar, you can cut down to royal Deeside from there. Top class roads again.
All the roads in the central belt are boring, any that would'nt be are in a poor state of repair cannot be helped, best bet is to get away as quick as possible.
Edinburgh itself is worth a visit, not to much trouble getting your bike parked and more pubs than you can shake a stick at...cars are a different story! ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Agree with stinkywheely - go north. Braemar is good. Have a ride around all the distilleries if you're into whisky (if not you can always start ). Then up to Inverness and a bit more north if you can. Pick any A road with 3 digits. Those with 2 digits can be a bit touristy (is that a real word?).
Alternative is to head across to Skye, but beware of the tourists. Mind the midges and sheep and have a good time.

are you talking biking or sightseeing? Because if you're talking sightseeing then you have to see Edinburgh - the festival is on at the moment as well which means a/. the place is manic b/. the place is packed c/. the place is more expensive than usual d/. the place is wonderful. I love the festival
And yes, the highlands are also well worth visiting, with bike or without! ____________________ "The problem with the French is they have no word for 'entrepreneur' " George W Bush

The map that zero posted has many superb roads but includes a few that I would avoid.
Noteably the section between perth and aberdeen, the A90 is utter shite and there are THIRTEEN gatsos each way between dundee and aberdeen.
Better to take the spittal of glenshee road and cut down to aberdeen (or accross to Banff Via ballater, aboyne, Rhynie, and Huntly) from Braemar, or if you are short of time (that is a fair detour), pull off the A90 to Fettercairn and take the Cairn 'o Mount road through to banchory.
For the route north to edinburgh, A1 to be avoided (but quickest), A7 is good, A68 is even better if only for the series of humps in the road. You will get ANY bike airborne down it
That detour round Dumfries and Galloway is a VERY long ride, the Girvan road heading south is interesting but the whole bit from Stranraer east is boring as fuck and crawling with police. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Where to go really depends on what you're wanting to do there. Are you going on the bike and wanting to ride good roads, or are you going for a holiday and wanting a break and a chance to relax or what? Not been to Scotland myself, but my sister lives up in St. Andrews and goes to uni up there, and from talking with her before she says that Edinburgh is a great town in most aspects, good for sight seeing and general tourist type stuff, and also good for going out and stuff like that.
More information as to what you're wanting to do will mean people are about to give more accurate answers and answers that are of any interest, as you could be interested in surfing and interested in finding good places to go up there (and there are quite a few good ones). |

Answers for you if you're interested in surfing then.
Depends what type of surf you're into as for kayak surfing the best spot for it in the UK is in Wales. |

We did exactly that, Edinburgh and then off to the highlands.
We stayed here - https://www.glengarry.net/index.php they were really nice people and the food was out of this world.
It was nice as the owner of the place would ring the dinner gong when it was time to eat.
Worth a look, really nice. ____________________ Mr Pants! (Alex or Al)
