Hi all,

Earlier today the bike (K4 GSXR 750) lost all power and died. After leaving for it for 10 mins would have enough power to light up the dash but not to start, RAC guy came out and ran a multimeter across the terminals, If i recall it was over 12v when off and after he jumped started it from his van did not rise much given a few revs (did not catch this reading unfortunately).

We let it charge from his portable box for about 10 minutes or so, the plan was to ride as far as i could with him following. It started fine but got about 20 bike lengths before dying, restarted once or twice for a few seconds but then died again.

His diagnoses was a faulty reg/rec, the battery is a year old Motobatt. I'm just about to order a new reg/rec from wemoto but have also been reading when the reg/rec goes it can also take the stator with it (or vice-versa) is this something I need to consider? (I don't have access to a multimeter at home, although i really should buy one)

Any ideas? I'm rubbish with electrics.

Cheers

Common feature. Don't buy a new one. All the 600/750/1000 units are interchangeable AFAIK even the 'busa one. Later ones seem to have two plugs but I bet they work too. Lots on ebay for £35

Thanks Pete, I was looking on ebay specifically for 750 2004 versions, that widens the search.

Hard wiring it would be a possibility if you fancied using the later R1 MOSFET type ones.

I had a spare with me just in case when I went to Spain Thumbs Up

I have read the MOSFET units are much better and don't suffer overheating.

I have a trackday at rockingham coming up very soon, I wouldn't be happy to change the connectors around or do any wiring myself (To make it compatable). Whereas a straight swap of the reg/rec even I could manage without having to take a day of work and go into the garage.

Trackday just disconnect headlights if you can't turn them off and run 2 batteries or take a trickle charger with you. 20 minute stints can be done easy if you just unplug running gear Thumbs Up

I did my reg/rec and I'm a fucking ham fisted lemon. Laughing

If your replacing the r/r, must be worth getting a multimeter and checking the output from stator at the same time?

It's a 30 second check and might save a load of hassle.
