I have some pretty embarrassing computer trouble. I've somehow broken the LAN port on my computer. My house isn't wired, so this isn't normally a big problem as I use wifi, but now I'm having a play with a Pi and tried to share my connection.
I can't do it. It won't register at all, no lights on at the port or anything. Cable is good, I think the problem is my fault from installing some VPN software that's reconfigured the network adapter. I've removed said software as much as I can, but no joy. I don't know my way around the registry to have a rummage around in there either.

Solutions so far:
-Somebody on here knows how to fix this
-Call it a day, rebuild windows
-Ignore the problem and spend a fiver on a wifi adapter for the Pi

Try doing a system restore to before you installed the software you think fubar'd your network adapter.

If that doesn't work, run Device Manager to find out what network adapter you have. Use a phone, or a different computer to download, the software for it. Then install that on the original PC

If that doesn't work then buy a wifi adapter

The network adapter is just the one that's on my motherboard, tried downloading the drivers from the manufacturers website but when I try to install it gives this error:
"The Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable."

I don't have any backups to do a restore from. I think the problem was caused in November, but it's only presented itself now.
My main PC has a wifi adapter, which is why I haven't noticed until now. It's just my Raspberry Pi that I need to use ethernet for.

Device manager, network adapters, find ethernet one.
right click
hold "shift" and select remove device.
if you get the option to remove drivers, remove them.
once finished
reboot

There's no device there, I removed and reinstalled drives and got nothing, even after I stripped all the vpn software including registry files. Did some googling and saw people fixed this by removing the bios battery but that didn't solve it either.

In the end I remembered that I also have a laptop, so I routed through that instead. Just have to do that in future...

Now I just have to be work out how to use the Pi!
