im going to view a bike on wednesday, private seller.
i like the look of it and havent had any concerns raised yet, so to all intents and purposes, i may well be buying it.

in the case that this happens, how best do i deal with paying the seller, but also arranging collection of the bike?

if i pay for the bike on the spot - in cash (in order to get a better deal perhaps), im then at the mercy of having it at the sellers property until its collected. which in an ideal world, i wouldnt mind, but since its not just 'down the road' this is a situation i'd rather not be in.

worse case, if i cant arrange collection till the following weekend, this leaves room for someone else to come along, seller sells it, and doubles their money and im left out of pocket...and other such variations on the theme....

basically, am i going to have to put some trust in the seller not to screw me over once i've paid for it and arrange for collection ASAP?

if i pay them and the V5 is signed over to me, legally, do i have any defence in the situation where they try to screw me over?
if its signed over to me - but left on their property and something happens to it over night - and i've not insured it etc, what happnes then? or am i best to get on to insurers as soon as ive bought it...??

i feel like i might be over thinking this......

Any reason you can't ride it home?

When I bought the shite-ped it was the next village over and I couldn't collect till the following day (too lazy to walk there and ride back), so I just whacked a big chain around it and locked it.

Put a deposit down? It still boils down to trust with your money but it's less than giving them the price of the bike.

I went to view a bike, put a £50 deposit down and returned the following week to collect. Just make sure you meet them at their house and not at an M1 service station etc and make sure they seem respectable enough not to pocket the deposit. Thumbs Up

the deposit thing has worked for me in the past - but it was just over the other side of town. guess i could arrange collection that day, but not sure how that works - am viewing it later afternoon, so could arrange next day.

could ride the bike back i guess, but it comes with lots of spares (wheels, engine...)

bike doesn't have an mot either.....

My brother had a bike he bought 'stolen' from someone else's house years ago in almost the fashion you describe. Lost the money and the bike.

Pay a small deposit, get a receipt which states balance payable on collection. Collect and pay.

my bad - it was MOTd Sept last year Embarassed
I could potentially ride it home - would have to arrange pick up of the 'spares' somehow and be confident enough to ride the bike back. its a fair old distance, but could add to the excitement of the situation....

Seller is happy for me to leave a deposit and pick up at the weekend.

im hoping it all goes well tomorrow as i'm looking forward to getting back on a bike Smile

meanwhile im waiting for insurance to finish faffing with my stolen/recovered bike to see how much i've shafted myself.....
