Roundabout where M66, M60 and M62 all meet

Motorway at bottom left is M66 southbound which I've exited becoming M60 clockwise

Motorway at bottom right is M62 becoming M60

Traffic following M60 clockwise must leave M'way, onto roundabout and cross traffic from M66 wanting to go M60 counterclockwise

I've waited for light to go green and last 'amber gamblers' to pass and then set off, glanced right to check nothing else coming

I'm about to start filtering round the roundabout when a grey vauxhall vectra suddenly fills my peripheral vision.

Purple is me and my direction of travel, grey is him and his direction of travel

How can I spot this happening / avoid it?

I can only assume he's got bored of waiting and is wanting to come round all the traffic in lanes for M62 not realising the lights have changed against traffic from his direction (lets assume he's in front of the light and isn't jumping the red)

I look round at him, he gives a hands in the air as if to say 'what?' and looks angry, I move forwards as my way clears to get into filtering, he drives around as he was intending to.

It was a near miss, therefore you did avoid it. Anywhere there is stationary traffic but with space for a vehicle to manoeuvre, you should be ready for a vehicle to do just that.

If you did exactly what your drawing shows, you did nothing wrong. This kind of dodge is common on my commute. Someone at the back of the queue knows that the likelyhood of getting in towards the front as stationary cars move off and create gaps is very high so they chance their arm by launching down the wrong lane and time it so they arrive at an opening gap then duck in. you got caught at the first stage of this because the grey car driver was more intent on what he was doing than looking for stray bikes.

Just learn from his mistake and move on (or off).

You were in the right, and what you did is fairly normal.

From my perspective (seeing a map on google earth, sat at home). Why didn't you just pull up in lane three so you wouldn't have had to filter and then could just pin it down the slip road to the right?

That round about is just one of those things that if you did the right thing you would be wrong so everyone does the wrong thing and is right. Just go with the flow and if someone wants to demonstrate, let them.

That's exactly what I would have done. Even if I was carrying on round the roundabout I would use that empty lane and just nail it off the line.

I only spotted him when he suddenly emerged into view on my right coming to a stop.

Being right and being a pancake is no good - there was no action I took to stopping the situation and my route forward was blocked (it opened up a moment later)

Are we numbering lane 1 as closest to centre of roundabout?

the traffic off M62 going round and up the M66 has to cross the traffic I'm in and often the junction gets snarled up with traffic and the light is usually red with a queue of cars so razzing off the line isn't the best option as you need to be back on the brakes quick or there is traffic in the way across you.

when I've used lane 3 I've ended up back on the M60 and had to cut through Manc to get to work.

In short, yes, looks possible, often isn't

Sometimes there are occasions where there isn't much else you could do. Even had you taken the clear lane to pin it off the lights, a car could have decided just at the moment you were passing it to pull out without looking.

There are often cars under the bridge waiting at the line, traffic crossing from off the 62 occasionally blocks the other side of the roundabout up and would make it a bit too dodgy.

Following the Police twitter and that area is always an issue. Just people need to be alert and realise cars/bikes can't be used like washing machines.

I have said it loads of times. We need to keep up our standards of driving, or improve them, through out our driving careers. Tests or courses and proof of such. If your licence is that important to you then you would do something about it. I have more documents covering me to sit on a building site eating a butty than I do to get to and from the bloody place.
